Position Purpose:
The Medical Interpreter provides bilingual/bicultural interpreting services to patients on the various clinical units of the hospital. Provides interpreter service for families and for staff members and consults with hospital staff regarding culturally sensitive language issues. Position requires assistance securing appointments or scheduling tests for various outpatient procedures
What you will do:
Helps facilitate successful delivery of services to linguistically diverse consumers.
Furnishes patients, physicians and other hospital personnel with interpreting and basic translation services to ensure an accurate understanding of medical conditions, treatment recommendations, and other related issues and services.
Functions as a member of the hospital team, to ensure the appropriate delivery of culturally sensitive services throughout the SPHS organization.
Provides verbal interpreter services to various departments for written consents, informational or educational publications.
Develops and maintains accurate computerized data, and daily schedules related to service requests and sources of referral. Prioritizes and completes paperwork in a timely manner.
Informs and educates patients, staff and others of Bilingual/Bicultural information and services available within the hospital. Promotes and develops strong and user-friendly professional relationships among clientele.
Provides limited verbal translation as required in patient encounters such as completing forms, medical instructions, and medication schedules.
Supports the office operations by answering the telephone, taking request and/or calling patients to confirm appointments.
Maintains patient confidentiality and communicates in a professional manner at all times.
Minimum Qualifications:
Highschool or GED -Required
Knowledge or ability to interact with patients and staff at all levels, reflective of experience gained by two (2) years’ experience in a client/patient-centered environment, preferably within Interpreting Services. Experience in a mental health environment preferred.
Position requires successful completion of state approved "Basic Medical Interpreters course" or willingness to take such course with satisfactory completion.
Position requires competent bilingual skills in English, a second language, and a level of comfort in challenging situations requiring tact and diplomacy.
Requires the ability to provide a high level of customer service with a positive approach. Must be familiar with and able to work with the diversity of cultural/socio-economic backgrounds.
Possesses good interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills. Knowledge of computer systems helpful, using Midas and Meditech for documentation.
Working Conditions:
Assignment requires involvement in all the clinical settings of the hospital and may result in the need to exercise precautions with patients.
Fast-paced clinical and office environment with ability to adapt and prioritize to frequently changing situations.
May be subject to difficult and painful Triad-encounters that may result in significant discomfort for the patient.
