Medical Laboratory Scientist (multiple positions)

St. Cloud, MN

Job Duties include the following: Performs highly complex, moderately complex, and waived laboratory procedures using established and approved protocol that require a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision. Responsible for operating, maintaining, and validating instrumentation/equipment and records; major troubleshooting of equipment,

instruments, and procedures; recognized factors affecting measurement and takes appropriate action; performs quality control, proficiency testing and quality assurance activities related to test performance; recognize results that are abnormal or deviate from expected. May be involved in special projects, evaluations, and implementation of new methodologies in the laboratory.

Specific duties include:

Collects and processes biological specimens accurately and efficiently in accordance with laboratory policy/procedure on patients of all ages, including infants. Performs pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical functions including clerical duties.

Performs highly complex, moderately complex, and waived laboratory tests on patients, proficiency, and quality control specimens in the Laboratory, demonstrating yearly competency validation for all testing performed.

Applies medical theory to analyze results being generated, recognizes deviations from expected results, verifies results appropriately, and corrects problems using scientific principles, with timely direct reporting of critical values. Communicates effectively regarding test results, methodology and factors that can influence test results.

Performs, interprets, and documents quality control data including instrument calibration and validation, makes judgments concerning the results, and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision required by governing inspection agencies and CentraCare Laboratory policies.

Performs required daily instrument check-in procedures, calibrations, routine maintenance, recognizes instrument malfunction and performs major and minor troubleshooting of instrumentation, equipment, and procedures as necessary with proper documentation and communication.

Incorporates principles of educational methodology in the instructions of students and employees in implementing new procedures/instruments and daily work as directed by a technical

specialist or laboratory manager.

Develops special projects and helps evaluate new techniques and procedures as directed.

If assigned "In-Charge" of a laboratory area or shift, organizes, directs, performs, and reviews workload with appropriate follow-up to a member of the CentraCare Laboratory Leadership Team.

Follows safety rules while working with instruments, toxic & flammable chemicals, body fluids, and cells. Properly instructs other employees and students.

Supports and participates within department and CentraCare culture to foster/reward teamwork, self-direction, continuous improvement, learning and professional development.

Promotes the CentraCare’s Standards of Performance in Customer Service.

Communicates effectively with coworkers, superiors, subordinates, patients, and the public.

Because the facility is a 24/7 operation, position may include mandatory participation in various schedules to include on call, day, evening, night, and/or weekend and holiday rotations or coverage.

Works independently using critical thinking skills in an acute care setting, managing transfusion protocols, trauma patients, and requiring advance critical thinking for organism work-up and test interpretation in Microbiology when applicable.

Depending on hospital location may require additional skillset in specific departments such as Microbiology, Transfusion medicine, Special chemistry, Special Coag, etc.

Successfully completes all competencies as assigned and may be responsible for verifying competencies of fellow employees.

Performs other duties as assigned.

May perform job duties at other CentraCare Health System worksites in Minnesota.

Educational Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related degree. In lieu of Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science, may possess related bachelor's degree w/ necessary science/math credits as required & verified by the

ASCP Board.

Specific Skills and Other Requirements: Must possess certification in Clinical Laboratory Science from the American Society of Pathology Board of Certification within six months of hire. May perform job duties at other CentraCare Health System worksites in Minnesota.
