The Dana-Farber lab located in Merrimack Valley in Methuen, MA has an opening for a per diem Medical Lab Technician. Under close supervision, the Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for following procedures and performing tests on blood and various body fluids using automated analyzers and manual test procedures, in accordance with laboratory procedures.  The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for adherence to the laboratory quality control policies and procedures to ensure reporting of accurate and timely test results.

Responsibilities Perform various routines and complex technical procedures on body fluids, utilizing laboratory equipment.Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot lab instruments; identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or report of test results and either correct or immediately notify supervisor; document all corrective action when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.Report accurate laboratory tests in a timely manner following technical procedures, using the clinical lab information system and/or back-up to enter and verify test results.Adhere to the laboratory quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations.Maintain laboratory instrumentation records as well as quality control records related to test performance according to lab procedures and as directed by supervision.Participate in the proficiency testing program.Maintain competence; attend all required safety/infection control/departmental sessions and further continuing education.Comply with all policies regarding the confidentiality of patient information and the lawful use of any computerized patient data.May carry out special assignments, including bone marrow smears processing.Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent (i.e., Military trained – Medical Lab Specialist certificate of training obtained prior to April 24, 1995).No years of experience required; clinical, chemistry or hematology lab experience preferredPreferred: Certification by American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA) or equivalent agency as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, or specialty certification.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Basic knowledge of laboratory and medical terminology.Good communication and interpersonal skills.Ability to use sound judgement, communicate effectively and maintain high standards for patient care.Ability to work well under pressure in a heavily team-oriented environment.Ability to learn quickly and work efficiency and effectively in a fast-paced environment.Capacity to remain flexible and multi-task is key.Knowledge of clinical laboratory science and standards necessary to perform high complexity testing as defined by CLIA and to accurately report results.Analytic abilities to perform highly complex testing as defined under CLIA 88 to interpret findings, perform calculations, calibrate instruments, review highly complex testing performed by other employees.Ability to maintain compliance with all regulatory agency (e.g. Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO),CAP, FDA, AABB) requirements.Manual/visual dexterity necessary to prepare specimens, prepare solutions, screen specimens and operate a computer software system.Ability to perform venipuncture techniques.
