JOB SUMMARY: The Section Head/Shift Supervisor has all the technical skills and performs all of the duties as outlined in the Medical Technologist/Histology Technician job descriptions, except the Section Head/Shift Supervisor is the technical expert for their section/shift and is responsible for the management of the section/shift and for participating in the management of the laboratory as a whole. The Section Head/Shift supervisor interacts with patient populations from neonate to elderly; with patients of all types of illnesses.

Education & Training: Section Head/Shift Supervisor: Completion of a Bachelors degree in a related science and an accredited program in Medical Technology, or a combination of education and experience with nationally recognized certification at the technologist level. ASCP or Masters degree preferred. SBB preferred for Blood Bank Supervisor. HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) preferred for Histology.
Work Orientation & Experience: Demonstrated supervisory experience required. At least three years of pertinent full-time laboratory experience. For Section Heads/Shift Supervisor at least two years must have been in the designated specialty.
Skills & Abilities: Visual acuity and color perception is required. In addition to the skills and abilities outlined for Medical Technologist or Histology Technician, as appropriate, the Section Head/Shift Supervisor must have the ability to: a) effectively resolve problems; b) develop section policies and procedures, c) achieve desired section productivity; d) maintain harmony within the section and between the section and the rest of the department; e) lead by example; f) foster a service excellence atmosphere that contributes to a healing and compassionate environment.
