Job Summary

The position of Medical Physicist involves a variety of wide ranging responsibilities within Diagnostic Radiology including the evaluation, acceptance testing and annual testing of x-ray equipment, the development and overseeing of quality assurance programs, the education of the medical staff, radiology residents and radiation technologists, regulation and compliance, radiation safety, research and development, interaction with vendors and service personnel (both internal and external) and special projects. Coverage and travel between the alternate sites of care is required. Always Follows Beaumont philosophy of Patient and Family Centered Care.

Essential Functions

Equipment Evaluation and Testing: Evaluating all imaging equipment to maximize image quality, ensure patient safety and comply with the requirements of regulatory and accrediting bodies on the state and federal level such as the MDCH, FDA, JCAHO, ACR and others. Working with service personnel to assure and facilitate repairs.Teaching and Training: Participation and oversight of physics instruction for residency education and the school of radiologic technology is mandated by accrediting agencies. In addition, the physicist is involved with ongoing education of the physicians and staff in technology, safety, compliance, and quality assurance.Clinical and Quality Assurance: Oversight of existing quality assurance programs (many of which are required by law), development of quality assurance initiatives, and the resolution of issues which might result in sub-optimal diagnostic outcome. Protocol optimization for clinical application.Research and Development: Stay abreast of developments in imaging to facilitate the introduction of innovative technology into the department. Develop strategies for the utilization of innovative technology. Initiation, participation and guidance in research projects which may include medical staff and residents.Professional Activities: Representing Beaumont on State and National Committees drafting new guidance documents affecting the department. Attendance and participation at professional conferences to
represent the hospital, maintain technological expertise and network with other physicists. Maintaining continuing educational requirements.Radiation Safety: Act as the Troy hospital representative to the Radiation Safety Committee and act as a Diagnostic Radiology and Molecular Imaging Departmental Radiation Safety Officer Designate. Shielding design. Radiation safety training for new employees and annual training for existing employees in radiation use departments.Special Projects: As directed by the Chairman of the Radiology Department. (Examples: MR database development and oversight, PACS). Administration. Planning for departmental design

Qualifications

Required master’s degree Physics, Medical Physics, or closely related discipline. (These are also required for eligibility for board certification.)2 years of relevant experience professional experience. Required1 year of relevant experience full-time radiation safety experience under the supervision of the individual identified as the Radiation Safety Officer on a Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) or Agreement State license that authorizes similar type(s) of use(s) of byproduct material. PreferredWorking knowledge of the NRC, State, FDA, FAA and DOT regulations for radiation safety.
