Medical Physics Assistant

Description:POSITION PURPOSE

The Medical Physicist Assistant (MPA) performs tasks under the supervision of a Qualified Medical Physicist (QMP) in radiation oncology. The general responsibilities of the MPA include, but are not limited to, performing routine machine, treatment planning system, imaging and patient specific quality assurance (QA), assisting in the maintenance of physics and therapy equipment and assisting with documentation and radiation oncology EMR data management. The MPA assists in validating new radiation technology including acceptance testing and commissioning, plays an active role in improving the existing quality control programs and supports daily physics tasks. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Medical Physicist Assistant performs patient-specific radiation measurements and calculations, performs quality assurance tests of photon beam characteristics and mechanical characteristics of therapy equipment under the supervision of a qualified medical physicist, and participates in research and development projects in collaboration with Qualified Medical Physicists. The Medical Physicist Assistant maintains appropriate proficiency in the use of radiation treatment machines, radiation measuring equipment, treatment planning computers, and related software. The Medical Physicist Assistant assists with radiation surveys of treatment rooms as required by the clinic’s procedures and state and federal regulations, follows all medical physics quality assurance procedures and policies, and performs other duties as assigned. As required by the Supervisor, the Medical Physicist Assistant also participates in meetings, special task groups, and/or procedures in Radiation Oncology. 

External beam machine QA 

Assist/perform weekly, monthly and annual QA for linear accelerators (linac) and CT under supervision of a QMP. Ensures that machine QA is performed in a timely manner. 

Brachytherapy procedures and QA 

Assist the brachytherapy physicist team to ensure safe and smooth treatment delivery with High Dose Rate Brachytherapy. Perform High Dose Rate Brachytherapy Daily QA 

Oversight and Maintenance of QA Equipment 

Maintain QA equipment inventory, and ensure that appropriate calibration is performed for each QA device. Facilitate damaged and/or defective QA equipment replacement and repair process. Assist in the maintenance of clinical treatment equipment including quality control (QC) and storage process. 

Patient Specific QA 

Perform patient specific QA for IMRT/VMAT photon plans following established procedures by QMP. 

Protocol Management 

Prepare required protocol documents for submission. Ensure that credentialing requirements have been met for clinical protocols. Attend meetings, refine workflows, maintain and file credentialing letters and respond to other requests from the Clinical Trials Office (CTO). 

Implementation of New Procedures 

Assist the Medical Physicist in implementation of new processes or procedures, programs or workflow in the clinic such as establishment of a new QA platform, creation of source calibration for a new brachytherapy program etc. 

Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

BS in Imaging Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, or related fields.

The Medical Physicist Assistant position also requires excellent computer skills, technical problem solving skills, flexibility in work hours, ability to work evening and overnight shifts, ability to manage time, and the ability to communicate effectively both written and orally, and cooperate with others.
