JOB SUMMARY
The Med Rec Coding Specialist - Hospital Coding assigns accurate diagnosis and procedure codes to medical records for all patient types used the appropriate coding classification system following coding guidelines and specific payor requirements. Able to use a variety of computer systems for maintaining, retrieving, and processing required data. Audit and assigns charges according to policy.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.
Minimum Required: Associates degree in Health Information Management or related filed required.
Preferred/Optional: None
EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Minimum Required: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to prioritize, work independently and meet required deadlines. Professionalism a must. Able to interpret medical information for coding. Able to apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to coding functions. Continue to maintain education knowledge through reading, attending program and communicating with fellow coders.
Preferred/Optional: Preferably one year or more of acute care facility coding experience.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position. Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.
Minimum Required: Must have credentials in AHIMA , RHIA, RHIT, CCS or AAPC and or must obtain credentials within one year of hire.
