The **Medical Review Intern** will serve in the Office of Health Care working closely with the Health Care Eligibility and Access - State Medical Review Team (SMRT). The State Medical Review Team (SMRT) is seeking an Intern to support its mission of determining disability status for Minnesotans applying for Medical Assistance and related programs. SMRT plays a vital role in evaluating disability determinations using the Social Security Administration’s 5-step evaluation process. The Medical Review Intern work will directly impact SMRT’s ability to serve Minnesota’s most vulnerable populations by supporting timely and accurate disability determinations, helping clients access essential services. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and passionate about helping underserved communities. This Internship offers hands-on experience in case processing, healthcare access, and public service, making it an excellent opportunity for those interested in disability services and program administration.
**Some responsibilities include but not limited to:**
+ Assist in screening initial referrals for disability determinations
+ Request and organize appropriate medical evidence to support case evaluations
+ Contribute to improving team efficiency and reducing processing times for referrals
+ Ensure high-quality standards in case preparation and documentation
**Minimum Qualifications**
To be eligible for an internship, you must meet the following requirements:
You must be a student at an accredited educational institution; **or** recently graduated December 2024 or May 2025
**AND**
+ Excellent human relation and communication skills sufficient to represent the position and division in a professional, efficient, and clear manner
+ Ability to work independently and in a team setting
+ Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
+ Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
+ Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and contribute to a culture of inclusion
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ Preferred majors include: **human services and public health (i.e. Social Work, Community Health, School Counseling/Special Education, Mental Health Counseling, etc.)**
+ Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
+ Familiarity with medical terminology sufficient to understand common medical and psychological terms used in medical record documentation
+ Ability to work effectively with diverse communities, groups, and individuals
+ Experience with case management software is highly preferred
+ Interest in learning about services available to Minnesotans with disabilities and the disability determination process
**Additional Requirements**
+ Must be in academic years of sophomore, junior, or senior (Graduate students allowed)
+ Must provide unofficial transcript to show proof of school enrollment
+ Must be willing to reside in Minnesota for the duration of internship
+ Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) criminal background check will be conducted on all finalists for this position. Finalists must pass the DHS background check.
