Medical Student Internships

Job Overview

This is a general listing for Medical Student Internship placements. Specifics about the activities, responsibilities, and expectations are listed in the Affiliation Agreement between your educational institution and Cascadia Health and are also determined by your institution’s program requirements.

Medical Interns may:

Under the guidance of supervising providers, provide services such as psychiatric assessments and ongoing medication management to consumers receiving services at Cascadia clinical programs, while supporting a Trauma Informed Care environment. With the high prevalence of trauma among individuals receiving mental health services, it is required the medical student understand the effects of trauma on health, coping, and other aspects of the lives of those we serve. Depending on the program served, services may range from one-time consultations to internal staff or external partner providers/agencies to ongoing services. Under the guidance of a supervisor, provide formal and informal case consultation to case managers, therapists, nursing staff, and other treatment team members. Coordinate with primary care and other external care providers serving individual consumers, as per community standards. Provide case consultation and support to family and/or other members of individual consumers support systems, as needed.

Medical Student Interns: A minimum commitment of four weeks. Enrollment in an accredited educational program with one of Cascadia's partner institutions is required.

Requirements & expectations

In order to be considered for an internship, each individual must:

Pass a Criminal Background Check (CBC): Interns/residents shall receive a Criminal Background Check (CBC) through Oregon's Department of Human Services via Cascadia's People & Culture Department (at no cost to student). Placement at Cascadia is contingent upon submission of results of required CBC. Prior to receipt of a student's final fitness determination, if students/residents receive preliminary approval, they may be engaged in orientation, training and work activities that do not include unsupervised contact with those receiving services. Students disqualified by DHS/Background Check Unit (BCU) will be immediately disengaged from placement. The student placement may be reinstated if an appeal is processed by DHS/BCU and the disqualification is reversed. Please see FAQs for more info on the CBC.

Follow and adhere to Cascadia's confidentiality requirements, including the federal Health Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA), Cascadia's client confidentiality policies, including any and all applicable Oregon Revised Statutes (ORS) and Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR) which support client confidentiality.

If accepted into an internship position, complete Cascadia's onboarding process, including agency orientation and student/intern documentation.

The applicant must demonstrate a commitment to helping underserved members of our communities.
