GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Medical Laboratory Science Student performs complex processing of specimens in various laboratories upon acceptance to the Beaumont Medical Laboratory Scientist program and during their clinical internship. May have equipment maintenance and quality control duties. May handle hazardous chemicals. May fill in for LA II and LA I. Duties may include responsibilities specific to assigned department and may vary dependent on assigned site/department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
+ Processing specimens: As appropriate for each lab, this may include hand staining, gram staining (micro set ups), inoculating specimens, aliquot reagents and solutions, setting up cultures, cytopreparation, accessioning, receiving, processing, pouring over, distributing, storing, disposing of specimens.
+ Communicates with healthcare personnel outside of department with regard to reports, clarification of requests, other problems related to specimens, requests, and testing delays.
+ Assisting the Medical Technologists with equipment maintenance, quality control responsibilities, ordering and maintaining correct chemical levels and inventory.
+ Clerical functions to maintain required records, files and reports pertinent to the functions of the lab. This includes assisting with pending lists and locating specimens for the department.
+ Technical responsibilities: Assisting the Medical Technologists with some technical tasks such as bone marrow processing and staining, and blood unit re-typing.
+ Waived Testing: assisting the technologists with waived testing including occult blood testing, urine hCG testing and osmolalities.

Education / Training :
+ BS in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related science. Acceptance into the Beaumont Medical Laboratory Science Program with a program start date within 8 months.
Work Experience :
+ Clinical laboratory experience preferred.
Certification, Licensure, Registration :
Certification per policy in appropriate discipline preferred.
+ ASCP Medical Laboratory Scientist - MLS(ASCP)CM (Effective October 23, 2009) See Notes below.
+ ASCP Medical Technologist - MT(ASCP) (Prior to October 2009)
+ ASCP Technologist in (categorical) certification – BB(ASCP), C(ASCP), H(ASCP), I(ASCP), M(ASCP), MB(ASCP), or CG(ASCP)
+ ASCP International Medical Laboratory Scientist - MLS(ASCPi) CM (Effective January 1, 2015. Note the superscript “i”.)
+ AMT Medical Technologist – MT(AMT) After 2010
+ Former NCA Clinical Laboratory Scientist - CLS(NCA) - or NCA categorical certification – Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) in Chemistry/Urinalysis, Hematology, Immunohematology, or Microbiology (Prior to October 2009; no longer offered.)
+ CGFNS/ICHP VisaScreen Credential Assessment equivalent to a Medical Technologist
+ Other certification as determined by laboratory department manager or laboratory administration.
