Medical TechnologistReq #:0000146661 Category:Laboratory and Medical Technologist Status:Per Diem Shift:Night Facility:RWJBarnabas Health Corporate Services Department:Lab CBMC Location: Cooperman Barnabas Medical Ctr, 94 Old Short Hillls Road, Livingston, NJ 07039 Job Title: Medical Technologist Location: Livingston, NJ Req#: 0000146661 Status: Per Diem Shift:Variable Department name: Lab CBMC Job Overview:Under the supervision of the section supervisor, the medical technologist assumes responsibility for the performance of routine, standardized biological and/or biochemical tests, as well as more complex procedures on blood, urine, tissues, body fluids and other specimens that assist physicians in the diagnosis and clinical management of patients. Assumes responsibility for recognizing results or problems that require referral to Technical Specialist, Pathologist or Administrative Coordinator, Qualifications: Required: + Baccalaureate degree in medical technology or sciences. + Knowledge of specialized principles or techniques which would normally be obtained through a formal four year college/university academic program. + Successful completion of all Orientation Programs. Preferred: + Registry with a recognized board of registry for medical technology, such as American Society of Clinical Pathologists preferred. Scheduling Requirements: + Per Diem + Night Shift + Variable Essential Functions: + Aheres to safety policies regarding safe handling/disposal of specimens, chemicals, biohazardous materials and sharps; maintains a clean and safe work environment and maintains patient and professional confidentiality. + Answers telephone giving factual information according to the nature of the question and within hospital guideline + Assumes in-charge responsibilities when assigned in the absence of Technical Specialist or Senior Technologist + Completes mandatory education in a timely manner. Participates in on-going education (in service, continuing education, etc.). + Completes work assignments by prioritizing tasks, giving STAT requests top priority and performing multiple tasks simultaneously + Confers with physicians, nursing staff, technologists, clerical staff, phlebotomists and students in regards to specimen or result inquiries + Determines acceptability of specimens; resolves discrepancies with accessioning personnel, procurement dispatch technicians, nursing personnel, physicians and other personnel. Manual). + Enters, deletes/adjusts and orders in the Laboratory Information System according to a requisition or verbal request by physician or nursing unit; forwards requisition to front office for billing. + Maintains appropriate amount of reagents/supplies by performing scheduled inventory/observing expiration dates; Records lot numbers and expiration dates in designated logs; records data received/placed into use of bottles/boxes/packages. + Maintains positive identification of specimen throughout specimen processing and testing; consults with Technical Specialist/Pathologist when unusual requests are received so that appropriate instruction can be obtained. + Performs, documents, evaluates required quality control procedures; documents corrective action taken or reason for accepting out of range results; notifies Technical Specialist if additional action is needed. + Periodically reviews policy/procedure/instrument manuals to ensure compliance; maintains current knowledge of procedures; participates in training/orientation of new employees.
