Medical Technologist
POSITION STANDARDS Satisfactory completion of a course of instruction given by a school of Medical Technology approved by the Council On Medical Education and Hospitals of the American Medical Association or who is otherwise recognized as a Medical Technologist by the strictest of any external agency whose standards may be binding upon this hospital. Registration by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), or the equivalent, is required. Age of Patients Treated:

POSITION PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Anything listed here requires a pre-employment physical by Employee Health to determine if the employee is capable of meeting the requirements. Physical Activity: Visual acuity; color vision required for some tasks. Upper Extremity: Manual dexterity Normal office lifting (10 pounds or less). Push/Pull/Lift/Carry: Standing, stooping, reaching, bending. Ability to tolerate stress due to pressures associated with the responsibilities of the position. PART TWO: FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITY

 

Position Objective Perform various chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. This work is performed in accordance with established protocols, guidelines, standard textbooks and journals, and accreditation guidelines when applicable.

 

Performance Expectation For areas assigned perform testing while applying proper techniques used in the laboratory disciplines of coagulation, hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology, blood banking and serology. Adhere to QC guidelines and utilize sound technical knowledge and judgment in assessing the validity of the test system. Accurately record specimen identification information and test results. Identify unusual, discrepant, or grossly abnormal laboratory results and correlate them with improperly drawn or submitted specimens or with test interferences, and process and report this information appropriately. Appropriately calibrate, standardize, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment. Report unresolved problems/ instrument malfunctions/ follow up action to the Technical Supervisor/ Lab Manager. Assume a leadership role in the laboratory in the absence of the Laboratory Manager and Technical Supervisor, when asked to do so. Participate in ordering of lab supplies to assure unencumbered functioning of the laboratory. Attend paid seminars and/or workshops when requested by Laboratory Manager. Perform arterial blood gas analysis in the absence of the Respiratory Therapist. Perform any other related special tasks as assigned by Technical Supervisor or Laboratory manager. Assist in outpatient/in-patient phlebotomies, specimen processing, non-patient registration, and requisition checks. Communicate with outside service representatives in regard to instrument malfunctions, and follows instructions given for instrument repair. When assigned to the reference department, package specimens appropriately and investigate new test requests from providers. Attend laboratory meeting or sign off on minutes if unable to attend. Refer needed changes in laboratory procedure manuals to the Laboratory Manager, as appropriate. Assist in writing of procedures and updating procedure manuals as assigned.
