Sunday -Thursday 1130pm- 730 am with weekend rotation

Performs analytical testing and blood bank procedures according to established and approved protocols, which require a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility in all areas of the lab and blood bank with minimal technical supervision; maintains equipment and records; performs and monitors quality assurance activities related to test performance.  Meets CLIA requirements for General Supervisor and provides on site supervision in the absence of the supervisor or manager.

accident/injury to patients, employees and visitors and reports problems to appropriate supervisor or the Patient Safety Hotline 610-237-7377.

Applies necessary measures to improve patient safety and promote risk reduction for patients by:

Adherence to Human Resources Policies and Procedures

Complies to Absenteeism Control Policy #60-06-07 and with the established departmental  “call-out” procedures. Complies to Lateness Control Policy #60-07-07 and with proper notification procedures. Complies with Hospital and Departmental dress code polices. Complies with Colleague Responsibility Policy #60-18-07. Complies with all other Human Resources Policies and Procedures.

Follows established procedures for collecting and processing biological specimens for the analysis and recognizes pre-analytical variables that affect laboratory results.

Recognizes the potential harm that could result due to a mislabeled specimen. Recognizes factors that affect things such as hemolysis, IV contamination and specimen age on general laboratory and blood bank testing. Knows proper procedure for handling suboptimal specimens. Follows up and properly documents all general laboratory and blood bank specimen problems in compliance with all quality monitoring systems.

5.     Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis.

6.     Knows the proper procedure and time limits for adding testing and additional units to a previously tested

        specimen.

7.     Retrieves specimens and blood units as needed.

8.     Stores and/or distributes specimens to appropriate area(s) upon completion of processing/analysis.  Ensures

        that shared specimens are processed properly and in a timely manner.

9.     Investigates missing specimens and monitors un-received logs to identify specimens that arrived in the

        laboratory but may not have been processed properly.

Communicates information such as inventory and supply levels, problems, test results, reference ranges and specimen requirements to authorized sources.

Answers inquires regarding test results and specific factors that can influence test results. Phones all general laboratory alert values and documents in LIS that the call was made. Communicates problems associated with positive antibody screens and positive neonatal DAT’s to appropriate personnel and documents in LIS that the call was made.  Confirms that all required documentation is properly recorded in the patient’s record/chart/history file. Notifies the appropriate personnel when there are problems with patient testing such as QNS, Hemolysis. Utilizes the communication book appropriately. Properly handles incorrect reports/results and communicates corrected results and appended reports to the appropriate person. Communicates and follows up appropriately with the Red Cross personnel when there are problems with components, inventory levels or problems obtaining specific components for a particular patient. Contacts the pathologist and/or the supervisor when appropriate, for example least incompatible units, switching blood types questionable blood orders. Follows the Standard Operating procedure for communicating transfusion reactions.

Performs assigned manual and automated analytical tests and procedures promptly, efficiently and accurately.

Checks status of previous work. Investigates and corrects problems associates with work left pending. Ensures all assigned duties are completed in a timely manner. Prioritizes work appropriately. Reports to Supervisor or Director any problems or pertinent messages and completes the shift report in the absence of the on site supervisor. Performs general laboratory testing with accuracy and according to established policies and procedures. Always performs routine serological blood bank testing with 100% accuracy and according to SOP. Performs advanced serological blood bank testing accurately and according to SOP. Selects appropriate testing reflexive testing when abnormal results are obtained. Accurately and efficiently manages desired blood inventory levels. Selects appropriate blood components for patients

12.  Performs component preparation as per SOP.

13.   Accurately labels all tubes, components and reagents.

14.   Performs appropriate clerical checks and record reviews for patient and unit testing.

15.   reviews and follows all new procedures and changes in protocol.

Operates and maintains analytical instrumentation within the scope of training utilizing established protocols and quality control checks.

Follows all policies and procedures when operating instruments and performing testing in all major areas of the general laboratory and blood bank. Performs preventative maintenance and instrument calibration as scheduled and documents records of maintenance and calibration Recognizes the need for accurate establishment of calibration curves, identifies the need to recalibrate and appropriately calibrates analyzers. Troubleshoots equipment and problems via established protocols, troubleshooting guidelines and/or manufacturer service hotlines.

Recognizes analytical and post analytical factors which affect patient test resulting; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles and takes appropriate action according to predetermined protocols.

Recognizes equipment malfunctions and notifies appropriate supervisory personnel. Recognizes problems within the test system or controls. Recognizes the affect of cold and warm temperatures on testing protocols and reagent systems.  Correlates and compares blood bank patient testing, general laboratory tests, controls and blood component testing with previous results and other stages of reactivity. Identifies and reports any infrastructure problems that may affect testing or reporting of results and uses backup and downtime procedures when indicated.  (Example water, electric, LIS) Confirms that blood components meet the special needs requirements specified in the patient history files. Reports results inconsistent to appropriate personnel. Determines then service is required on instruments and implements backup procedures when necessary. Must be able to handle or refer to appropriate personnel, calls regarding special handling and interpretive problems. Recognizes all possible sentinel events and reports them immediately to the pathologist and supervisor. Knows how to contact all appropriate service personnel, administrative and management staff, security, hotlines and/or personnel when there is a problem.

Responsible for maintaining appearance, integrity and efficiency of the laboratory.

Participates in the evaluation of new techniques and procedures in the laboratory in terms of personnel, equipment, space, method comparison, cost analysis and establishment of reference intervals. Reviews reagent and supply inventories and submits requests for items as needed in line with the operating budget. Dates and unpacks supplies and keeps work area clean. Disposes of material according to hospital and laboratory regulations. Upholds and understands all rules and regulations as stated in the laboratory policy manual and the corporate policy manual. Arrives to work on time and prepared to work. Works schedules shifts and uses time off effectively to minimize shortages in the schedule. Adheres to the limits set by Mercy Health System Attendance policy.Maintains some degree of flexibility and is required to know all major sections and analyzers in the differentsections of the lab and on different shifts.  Provides on-site supervision in the absence of a shift supervisor or manager.  Maintains professional manner at all times, including proper phone etiquette. Complies with hospital and department dress code at all times. Displays respect for co-workers by properly managing time for lunch and break.  Actively affects laboratory efficiency by assisting other colleagues when time permits. Takes on call as scheduled and as needed.

Participates in the laboratory’s performance improvement program, special projects and evaluations of new procedures.

Schedules Continuing Education programs.

Prepares and presents annual continuing education programs for the department. Attends continuing education programs as presented by the department. Demonstrates and maintains competency by participating in required testing. Helps schedule, coordinate, and perform orientation and training for new employees and students. Gives direction and guidance to MLT’s, lab assistants and support personnel. Assures that all training/education documentation is completed in a timely manner.

Must have the ability to work in all areas of the Clinical Laboratory:

Hematology/ including reading of blood and body fluid cells differentials

Chemistry/Toxicology

Coagulation

Urinalysis

Microbiology stat testing (HIV, Gram stain reading, Rapid tests for Flu and RSV)

Each of the above departments is divided into sections of testing. The (3rd shift) generalist must demonstrate annual competency in all areas of testing. (Not required of MED Tech or Blood Bank Techs). 

. Demonstrates and maintains annual competency in all sections of the Clinical Laboratory including stat   Microbiology tests. Provides on site supervision in the absence of a general supervisor or manager.
