Cornell University’s Statler Hotel is searching for our next Meetings & Events Assistant Manager. Our Meetings & Events team are professional staff and bright, young, talented college students who are eager to learn and be inspired to work together to deliver a WOW to guests throughout their attendance at high-profile events such as professional conferences, recruitment events, cocktail receptions, and at glorious wedding celebrations in our beautiful ballroom. The Assistant Manager will support the hotel’s role as a learning laboratory for students by providing a quality, career-related work experience for students and participating in educational-related activities with the Hotel School’s faculty and students.

The Meetings & Events Assistant Manager Opportunity:

As a leader in the department, you provide direction for our team members to approach each event as special and unique as we prepare, flawlessly execute, and deliver an experience that will give our guests something they will want to brag about. Reporting to the Banquet Operations Manager, this role is responsible for the overall management of functions, the department’s staff and the training and development of the students. Daily operational duties include event planning, event setup, event execution, and event breakdown while other management duties will include assisting other operational areas of the hotel as needed (including service in Taverna Banfi Restaurant and Regent Lounge), assisting with the department budget process, inventory and purchasing, and communicating with hotel maintenance and housekeeping for facility maintenance, repair, and cleaning needs.

In our spirit of developing our students, this position provides key mentoring support for participants in the Hotel Leadership Development Program and the Cornell Hospitality Internship Program. The Assistant Manager is a part of the Statler Hotel’s Leadership Team and has the opportunity to initiate and lead projects as well as participate in management meetings serving on committees in the Hotel, School, and University.

What we are looking for in a Meetings & Events Assistant Manager:

We are seeking candidates who have the right combination of college education, food & beverage management experience and job skills to be an effective manager and leader in a busy, upscale catering and conference operation. 

Associate’s Degree and two to four years’ experience in banquets, catering and/or meetings management are required.Highly motivated, dynamic individual with a professional demeanor and superior customer service skills, indicative of a AAA rated Four Diamond hotel. Proven ability to assume responsibility, act decisively, and lead staff.Excellent oral and written communication skills.Ability to troubleshoot and resolve guest problems quickly and calmly.Must be driven and energetic with excellent customer service, teamwork and leadership skills.Must be organized and able to multi-task.Ability and enthusiasm to coach, mentor and train students as well as other inexperienced staff.Computer skills, proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.Professional demeanor fitting of a high end, four-diamond hotel property.
