Job Summary:

As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

The Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) Intake Screener works without practice general supervision and in alignment with established standards, policies and procedures, and meets with all clients admitted to a correctional centre within 24 hours to administer a standardized trauma informed screening and assessment protocol to identify mental health and substance use concerns. The MHSU Intake Screener refers clients who are identified to have a mental health, and/or substance use concerns to a regulated health care professional for a comprehensive assessment. All services are provided through an Indigenous cultural competency lens and within a trauma informed framework.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1.    Provides screening services by methods such as receiving and screening all newly admitted clients within 24 hours, assessing urgency and prioritizing new referrals in collaboration with the Health Care Manager  and/or designates and BC Corrections officials.

2.    Utilizes a standardized approach for screening and assessing mental health and substance use concerns by administering evidence-based tools as directed. Ensures that screening and assessment procedures are responsive to trauma caused by physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and the gender, sexual orientation/identity, cultural, ethnic, and linguistic diversity of the population, by methods such as conducting screening/assessment in the clients own language or arranging for an appropriately qualified interpreter; symptoms of mood, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder; evidence of recent injury; parenting status and skills; and administering gender-responsive assessments that query population-specific needs such as prenatal care and birth control practices

3.    Initiates appropriate follow-up care and treatment for clients who have been identified to have a mental health and/or substance use concern by referring them for a more comprehensive assessment by other interdisciplinary team members.

4.    Prepares pertinent documentation such as admission histories, progress notes or flagging of risk and/or security concerns. Participates in clinical meetings, and may be required to present new clients in rounds/case conferences, and/or provide input to the treatment team regarding strategies to support the inmate upon admission.

5.    Collaborates with other team members and participates in educational programs by organizing group attendance, facilitating a feedback process and assisting with understanding of the physical and mental health care needs of the Corrections Health Services population.

6.    Works with the Administrative Assistant to assure regular collection of statistics.  Compiles summary reports and presents data as requested.

7.    Participates in program planning and development as part of the interdisciplinary team. Identifies and facilitates program-planning strategies under the direction of the Health Care Manager or designate.

8.    Attends and participates in related in-service education programs in order to maintain a high standard of knowledge. Attends mandatory education sessions such as CPR, violence prevention, and fire safety.

9.    Utilizes and maintains equipment and supplies within departmental guidelines and budgetary resources.

10.    Provides an orientation to Corrections Health Services protocols, scope and hours of service and related information to newly admitted inmates.

11.    Maintains a physical and emotionally safe environment for all clients by assessing and identifying the need for interventions to manage and resolve crisis situations and implements appropriate actions. Reports emotional, attitudinal, behavioural and/or unusual occurrences to staff and the Health Care Manager or designate.

12.    Performs regular security functions to maintain the safety and security of clients staff, families and the general public at all times and takes immediate action to mitigate risks, as well as reporting all real and potential risk issues. Assesses individual inmate risks factors and incorporates risk mitigation strategies into clients’ care plans in order to optimize safety and security for staff, other clients and the general public.

13.    Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

•    Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or a related allied heath discipline.
•    Two (2) years recent related experience in a mental health and/or substance use care setting working with offenders, forensic mental health patients and/or in secure health care settings or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

•    Demonstrated ability to work well with and develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
•    Knowledge of the specific symptoms of major mental illnesses, substance use and/or concurrent disorders.
•    Demonstrated ability to problem solve, adjust to new or unexpected events and to deal effectively with conflict situations.
•    Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
•    Understanding of trauma informed practice.
•    Demonstrated ability to deal with others effectively.
•    Demonstrated ability to organize work and establish workload priorities.
•    Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.
•    Ability to operate related equipment.
•    Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
