Mental Health Assistant Group Facilitator

In conjunction with the treatment team, the Recreation Therapy Department provides therapeutic recreational wellness and activity-based services to mental health inpatients. The Recreational Therapy Department is responsible for planning and coordinating activities for patients throughout the course of during their hospital stay including evening, weekend, and/or holiday activities .
The Mental Health Assistant Group Facilitator (MHA-GF) facilitates and provides oversight of mental health assistants, peer counselors, students, and volunteers in the delivery of patient groups and activities during off hours, weekends, and holidays. MHA-GF would assist in conducting patient interviews upon admission to customize activities based on the individual patient’s interests and capabilities. In conjunction with the treatment team, and under direct supervision of the Inpatient Psychiatry Nurse Manager and Integrated Therapies Coordinator, the MHA-GF provides child, adolescent, and adult patient supervision in a treatment milieu.
The MHA-GF assists in maintaining a safe and secure environment that enhances treatment, provides care to patients in a manner that promotes safety, comfort, and therapeutic environment, models appropriate groups and is a support resource to MHAs, and provides education regarding group facilitation and milieu management to all members of the treatment team.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT(S):
+ High School Degree Required; Bachelors Preferred
+ 2+ years’ experience in the mental health field.
+ Precepting skills required.
+ Healthcare experience, specifically in a behavioral health setting highly preferred.
+ Experience in services, programs or agencies that provide direct support preferred.
+ Relevant experience in other environments may include mentoring, teaching, or coaching.
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills.
+ Strong Interpersonal and time management skills.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:
+ Supports the treatment team in maintaining a therapeutic milieu.
+ Performs assigned patient care activities and assists with all aspects of patient’s personal care, including patient nourishment.
+ Obtains and records objective patient data and patient care activities performed, documents in the medical record.
+ Assists with patient mobility; uses correct body mechanics and transfer techniques.
+ Performs one to one observation for patient safety and communicates observations; maintains a clean, safe environment for the patient and assists in maintaining a neat, well organized work area.
+ Responds to code situations as appropriate.
+ Facilitates patient groups and activities, documents individual patient participation in the medical record.
+ Develops and facilitates patient groups and activities to motivate patient participation and encourage creative expression and skill building.
+ Designs groups based on input/feedback from patients and co-workers.
+ Provides a positive, supportive atmosphere during recreation therapy sessions with appropriate use of boundaries.
+ Appropriately adapts or modifies activities to meet individual patient’s needs.
+ Understands specific patient population including basic terminology, diagnoses, issues, and conditions related to patient functioning.
+ Provides education to other MHAs through positive modeling and ensures access to appropriate materials for programing.
+ Provides direct support to MHAs to run basic groups with other staff members and independently
+ Communicates important clinical information about groups/patients to treatment team daily.
+ Successfully completes annual competency requirements.
+ Adheres to hospital policies and procedures for mandatory education, annual health assessments, and licensure verification.
+ Adheres to the policies and procedures as outlined in the Exposure Control Manual regarding:
+ Standard Precautions o Blood borne Pathogens.
+ Disposal of needles, syringes, and sharps.
+ Cleanup procedures for blood and body fluid spills, storage, handling, and disposal of medical waste.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Should be able to push/pull, lift/move 35 lb., be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers. Mobility requirements may include the ability to be stationary at a workstation for a prolonged period time in addition to being able to squat or be mobile for a reasonable length of time and distance. Participate in physical therapeutic activities such as but not limited to kicking, running, stretching, or dancing. Communication requirements include the ability to comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to communicate and read the English language.

Salary Range: $18.33-25.58 /hour Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
