Summary:

The Mental Health Technician is an entry level position applying principles and techniques of evaluation, therapeutic intervention, and treatment of patients. The technician manages a safe and therapeutic environment for mental health patients.

 

Experience/Education Requirements:

High school diploma or GED required.College level courses in Psychology or related field preferred or Bachelor's Degree preferred.Experience in a medical or psychiatric setting preferred.

 

License or Certification Requirements:

 

Responsibilities:

Able to perform mental status evaluations in ER setting to report to appropriate Dr. to determine appropriate disposition.Able to effectively follow through with recommended dispositions.Assists to maintain MHU standards of safety and cleanliness within the therapeutic milieu.Demonstrates an understanding of the action and side effects of psychotropic medications.Documents observations, interventions, and progress towards planned outcomes according to charting standards.Ensures that group and milieu programming occurs as scheduled.Implements planned treatment interventions and documents patients' response.Monitors assigned patients and assists with their personal care needs.Observes patient's mental status and documents per MHU charting guidelines.Possesses the knowledge and skill required to evaluate patients' mental status to determine treatment needs/interventions.Reports patient observations (assigned, group, milieu) to RN every shift.Utilizes approved behavioral management techniques when appropriate.

Blood and Body Fluids: Obtaining and transporting patients' body fluids. Cleaning patients who are incontinent of urine and/or stool. Controlling the agitated student such as scratches, bites,etc. This potential exposure reduced through non-violent crisis intervention education and the use of universal precautions.
TB or Airborne Pathogens: Minimal - Exposure potential reduced through the use of universal precautions.

Sensory requirements (speech, vision, smell, hearing, touch):
Speech: Needed for communication with patients and other staff.
Vision: Needed to read materials such as medical records.
Smell: Needed to detect the odor of ETHO on patients, smoke in patients' rooms or electrical hazards.
Hearing: Required for patient safety, telephone use, intercom announcements (i.e., Code 99) and taking vital signs.
Touch: Required to perform percussive assessments and to comfort patients. Also needed to manipulate tools and equipment.
