General Summary

This position is responsible for preparing detailed estimates based on the design documents, narratives, and specifications, focusing on the Mechanical/Plumbing/Fire Protection/Electrical/Technology/LV System (MEP) trades for our Federal Division.

Essential Job Accountabilities

Able to work independently without much supervision and be able to work well with a team of estimators.

Communicate mechanical and electrical estimate and scopes of work to estimating team, management including participate in estimate reviews with estimating team, management, and JV partners.

Prepare quantity take-offs, analysis, estimates, and studies for Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Electrical, Technology, and Low Voltage (LV) system items incorporated in assigned scope from conceptual design through completed construction documents.

Review and understand all bid documents and assess project risks

Understand project logistics and project schedules

Develop relationships with local & national Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Technology, LV system, and any associated services subcontractors, vendors and suppliers. Work with estimating team to build and maintain list of qualified vendors for projects.

Work with estimating team to ensure General Conditions and General Requirements (GC/GR) items are properly addressed in estimate including, but not limited to, items such as temporary heating/cooling, electrical power and lighting (including estimating of electrical and other utility consumption during construction), and other temporary utility work as required.

Prepare and assemble estimates and proposals for different contract types (e.g., lump sum, GMP, Cost Plus).

Ability to utilize BIM software to assist in both pre-construction and construction tasks related to MEP

Participate in estimate hand-off to Operations and conduct proper transfer of knowledge from Estimating to Operations teams.

Develop and solicit scope requisitions for bidding/procurement of Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Electrical, Technology, and LV system systems; coordinate with fellow estimators to eliminate scope gaps and overlaps.

Evaluate subcontractor proposals relative to their scope of work; determine scope coverage and manage risk of scope gaps.

Assist project operations staff in evaluating large change orders.

Gather and analyze Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Electrical, Technology, and LV system bid data for projects. Maintain historical cost database and unit cost pricing for ROM estimating.

Utilize quantification and cost estimating tools and/or software in use by the estimating team (Heavy Bid, AutoCAD, BlueBeam, etc).

May supervise Assistant MEP Estimators, Estimating Assistants and/or Interns.

Other activities, duties, and responsibilities as assigned.

Travel may be required for site visits, pre-bid meetings or other estimating operation support tasks.


Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or equivalent related work experience.

Work Experience

7+ years of construction estimating support, engineering, field support, or similar experience.

5+ years estimating experience related to Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Electrical, Technology, and Low Voltage System estimating experience or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Experience with Design-Build (DB), Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) or other alternate contract delivery types will be viewed more favorably


Knowledge, skills, and abilities

Proficiency with all MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), AGTEK Take-off and Primavera Scheduling software.

Advanced knowledge of Estimating software such as HeavyBid or similar direct estimating software, BlueBeam, and AutoCAD.

Advanced knowledge of Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Electrical, Technology, and Low Voltage systems

Advanced knowledge of construction principles

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Advanced knowledge of agency (U)DBE requirements

Familiarity with BIM software

Benefits may vary for positions located outside of the continental United States.

Base Salary Range: 

$99,756.00 - $149,633.00

Pay may vary based upon relevant experience, skills, location, and education among other factors.  ​
