Metallurgical Technician

The Metallurgical Technician position is responsible for ensuring customer and company metallurgical quality requirements are met and serve as a resource person for employees and customers. In addition, facilitate the process of continuous improvement on the shop floor.

Performance Expectations

· Metallurgical sample preparation and measurement of micro and macro hardness characteristics.

· Evaluation of material microstructures before and after heat treatment.

· Keeping records of measurements in order.

· MPI –samples and perform contamination test.

· Keeping equipment and laboratory in working order.

· Delegate tasks and provide information and guidance to staff members under their supervision.

· Evaluate the quality of raw material test samples and field data in order to recommend adjustments.

· Additional duties in the laboratory and on the shop floor assigned as needed.

Credentials

· Post-Secondary Education in metallurgy, material science (ferrous or nonferrous materials) or equivalent experience.

· Magnetic Particle Inspection Level 2.

· Minimum three years experience in Automotive Manufacturing environment or related experience.

· Minimum five years experience in heat treat operations or a combination of a minimum of five years of formal metallurgical education and heat treat experience.

· Previous experience working with metallurgical laboratory equipment.

· Ability to interpret microstructures of ferrous and nonferrous materials.

· Able to work with machine shop metal working tools.

· Ability to read and understand drawings.

· Use tables to record test data and measurements such as flotation results, pH levels, chemical composition values and weights (Document ES Level 2).

· Ability to compare production data against quality control test values to isolate and assess production problems.

· Ability to use a cutting saw to prepare samples for metallurgical evaluation.

· Ability to decide which methods to use to prepare samples for analysis.

· Knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel). 

· Familiar with TS 14969 and ISO14001

Desired Characteristics

· Ability to work collaboratively with engineers, other technologists and technicians and other staff. 

· May conduct work and collect samples independently.
