The Role
This position is for a Manager Design Engineering 1 position within the A1B Propulsion Plant Planning Yard's Structure, Shielding, and Hull Outfitting Group (Dept E70) supporting the construction and Fleet Support for FORD Class Carriers. Knowledge of Ford Class Carrier ships is preferred, but not mandatory. This position will require the successful candidate to manage the development and delivery of 2D Drawings and Model Files in support of CVN 78 Class new construction, as well as Class wide maintenance and modernization efforts (ShipAlts). Commodities associated with these products may include Coatings, Cathodic Protection, Insulation, Deck Coverings, Primary Structure, Foundations, Jigs and Fixtures, Material, and other Miscellaneous Structural and Hull Outfitting deliverables. This position regularly communicates with the Navy, other Department Leads, Supply Chain, NNL, Engineers/Designers across Departments, and NNS Waterfront via email, phone, and in person meetings. Utilizes NX, Team Center, AutoCad, Access Databases, and Microsoft Office.
Position will lead and manage the following activities: Designs major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposal. Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replace ability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost. Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development. Makes layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures. Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning. Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.
Must Have
Design Apprentice certification or Associate's degree in Design with 6 years of applicable, progressive professional and/or supervisory work experience;
Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline plus 4 years of applicable, progressive professional and/or supervisory work experience;
or a Master's degree in a relevant discipline and 2 years of applicable experience.
Nice to HaveExperience with traditional shipbuilding design and development processes, including Ship, Platen, and waterfront shops is helpful. A strong background in the areas of Integrated Digital Shipbuilding (iDS) and the CVN78 Class Product Model is preferred. A high level of engagement is required to ensure employees are cared for and developed, and that all deliverables are technically accurate, of the highest quality, meet all specification requirements, and are completed in time to meet established schedules. Should be able to manage multiple tasks utilizing the resources available and be able to react to changing priorities and schedules. Be able to identify and remove risks and obstacles to completing assigned tasking. Should have good leadership skills and ability to guide a team ensuring all work is performed to achieve established safety, security, first time quality, and business outcome expectations. Be committed to the HII-NNS Three Priority Behaviors and actively leading a culturally transformative effort within their AOR. Have the ability to work independently with little oversight from higher levels of management. Be able to establish and maintain good working relationships with our upstream (NAVSEA and NNL) and downstream (various shipyard departments) customers.
