This position operates Monday through Friday with occasional overtime on nights, weekends, and holidays. Responsibilities + Work with highly hazardous biological/toxic materials in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories. + Conduct assays on samples from in vivo pathogenicity/efficacy/toxicity studies as well as human clinical samples, including bacterial enumeration, viral assays, ELISA, PCR, nucleic acid isolation, and flow cytometry. + Perform routine blood and tissue processing and prepare reagents. + Contribute to the development and validation of equipment and biological assays. + Understand and perform dilutions including mathematical calculations involved. + Decontaminate equipment and materials, maintain mammalian, viral, and bacterial cell cultures. + Act as lab technical point of contact, perform laboratory cleaning and upkeep. + Manage supply inventory, ordering, and receipt. + Handle waste management, operate autoclaves, prepare decontamination solutions, and assist with laundry. + Operate necessary equipment to produce high-quality data, perform routine maintenance and calibration of equipment, and maintain equipment logbooks. + Use electronic databases for sample tracking and perform basic data manipulation in a spreadsheet environment. + Set up, validate, and operate laboratory equipment and software. + Read and adhere to SOPs, methods, and facility guidelines. + Perform timely quality control and technical review of data. + Create and maintain study files in accordance with SOPs, protocol, quality requirements, and client specifications. + Recognize and report deviations from accepted practices, prepare deviation reports as needed. + Adhere to all laboratory safety requirements. + Train and guide less experienced staff on specific tasks. + Serve as technical co-lead on portions of studies. + Work independently and efficiently in a team environment. + Verify the accuracy, applicability, and reasonableness of project work, and make recommendations. + Conduct standard and non-standard tasks under close supervision and guidance of more experienced staff. Essential Skills + Experience in Microbiology, Biology, and Aseptic technique. + Proficiency in PCR, assays, and cell culture. + Ability to perform in vitro assays. + Associate degree in microbiology/molecular biology plus 1 year of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. + Strong written and oral communication skills. + Ability to obtain/maintain certification in the Biological Suitability Assessment Program (BSAP). + Ability to obtain/maintain DoJ Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval. + Ability to obtain/maintain CDC approval to work with BSAT material. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Willingness to work in a BSL-2 and BSL-3 environment and wear appropriate respiratory protection. + Willingness to be immunized with FDA licensed vaccines and Investigational New Drugs (IND) for persons at risk to occupational exposure of biological agents. + Willingness to participate in random drug screening. + Ability to respond appropriately to various alarms and potential emergency situations. + Sufficient medical fitness to perform work in a lab wearing appropriate respiratory equipment and perform all assigned duties. + Ability to work night, weekend, and holiday hours. Work Environment This position is located at the West Jefferson location in a laboratory setting. Core hours are first shift Monday through Friday on a 9/80 schedule, with occasional required availability on weekends, nights, or holidays. This role is within a government facility. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $21.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
