Job Description Summary:

Engineering Student internships support the research and development of new or existing computer systems (hardware, software, components, and materials) or may assist in sustaining and improving the quality processes across the full engineering and manufacturing life cycle. Student interns will contribute to projects in various engineering disciplines such as computer hardware or software design and development, electro-optical design, optical and thermal model development, bioengineering, materials testing, electrical system design, hardware assembly, testing, etc. Student interns will test and evaluate products, systems, or components and work with various applications such as LabVIEW, MATLAB, SolidWorks, COMSOL, ANSYS, Mentor Graphics, Python, and GitLab. Student interns collaborate with engineers or technicians to build and test systems, hardware, or components on various projects. They may also be involved in ensuring quality products are produced and quality procedures are upheld.

Job Description:

Duties/Responsibilities

Design, develop, and enhancement engineering solutions for challenging problems. 

Implement, test, perform analysis, and provide documentation support.

Generate and present test reports including plots, tables, evaluation criteria, and conclusions from data collected and analyzed throughout the test process.

Complete assignments designed to develop a practical knowledge of processes, procedures, equipment, facilities, and systems as well as their interrelationships within engineering disciplines.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Enrolled in an accredited full-time undergraduate or graduate degree program required.

There is flexibility regarding hours and program duration based on applicant’s school schedule and availability.

Responsibilities

The Microsystems Integration Group is seeking a microsystems engineering intern to apply engineering principles to the transition to production of novel microelectromechanical (MEMS) and multi-die microelectronic systems. This includes low rate production and maturation of devices for research, biomedical, commercial, and national defense applications.

Experience in a laboratory environment and excellent communication and analytical skills are required. The role will support multiple interdisciplinary programs and will require a candidate who is comfortable conducting experiments, analyzing data, and presenting results. System design and experience on multidisciplinary team including vendors and external technologies is desired. Students selected will be expected to work on on-site in Draper’s Cambridge, MA headquarters on a full-time basis during normal business hours, collaborate with senior technical staff members, and communicate effectively both orally and in written memos or presentations.

The candidate should have a background in electrical, mechanical, chemical, and/or materials engineering and have demonstrated examples of self-driven efforts in technical areas outside her/his academic training. Specific tasks may include monitoring prototyping fabrication work flows, experimental data collection and analysis, coordination of and participation in advanced microfabrication techniques, and the documentation of prototyping procedures and experimental outcomes and analysis. The ability to work independently and be flexible to the continuously evolving nature of research and development efforts is essential. Roles include:

Learn semi-automated microelectronic assembly toolsConduct microsystems metrology including optical, acoustic, scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray, and mass spectroscopy-based analysisSupport lab organization and maintenance, such as sourcing and preparation of chemicals and materials, and calibration/maintenance of instrumentationTroubleshoot experimental issues

The position may also feature work with external collaborators from government, academia, and industry. 

Qualifications

Enrollment in BA/BS program in Material Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related disciplines. Graduate students in relevant fields are also encouraged.Working knowledge of fluid dynamics, thermal transport, and electric circuit theoryFamiliarity with CAD and physical modeling tools and microfabrication technologiesExcellent communication, and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with engineers, scientists, management, and other stakeholders across disciplinesProficiency with standard workplace and technical software such as Matlab, Ledit, Labview, Python, Solidworks, Comsol/ANSYS.

This position may require the ability to obtain a US Security Clearance. Minimum requirement for a security clearance is US citizenship.
