Mid-Level Engineer/Scientist (Environmental Investigations/Remediation) – New Jersey (Hub Office)

The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is adding a mid-level engineer/scientist with experience in various phases of site remediation primarily under the New Jersey Site Remediation Act, but also with cases under Federal programs, the New York Brownfields Program, New York Superfund, New York City Office of Environmental Remedition, and Pennsylvania Act II. This role will be based in our Whitehouse Station, NJ Office or another Tetra Tech NJ/Eastern PA Office hub.

Your Impact:

Tetra Tech has an immediate opening for Mid-Level Engineer with experience in the various phases of site remediation primarily under the New Jersey Site Remediation Reform Act, but also with cases under Federal programs, the New York Brownfields Program, New York Superfund, New York City Office of Environmental Remediation, and Pennsylvania Act II.  The primary role for this position will be to assist our project management team maintain project schedules and budget, coordinate fieldwork, assess data, modify remedial strategy in accordance with the data, and generate reports and other submittals to document the new information. This position opened because our environmental remediation business is expanding rapidly in the region and because our projects are complex and highly technical, requiring a large team to manage effectively. Tetra Tech’s remediation services include many complex sites that include remediation of both dense and light separate phase liquids (LNAPL and DNAPL), impacted groundwater in bedrock and tidally-influenced groundwater settings, and impacted shallow freshwater and saline sediments.  Our clients include both public and private sector organization, including several Fortune 500 companies.  This position will provide an opportunity for career growth while working on challenging and interesting projects. 

Your Role:

We expect that the role will include, but will not be limited to, completing the following work: 

 

Working in a team to manage specific aspects of multi-disciplinary projects. 

Working with the project management team on complex projects, including the management, coordination, and review of subcontractors, budgets, and schedules. 

Designing field investigations, preparing site-specific health and safety plans, and scheduling field technicians and subcontractors to carry out the field investigations. 

On occasion, serving as field team lead for complex investigations involving multiple personnel and subcontractors. 

Assisting field staff with overcoming unexpected field conditions as they develop in the field, directing the most complex issues to others in the project management team while solving other issues in real-time. 

Assisting with data management tasks that may be assigned by the project management team.  Such tasks may include managing junior staff in preparing data tables and figures, identifying data gaps and identifying the information needed to fill such gaps, and completing calculations that will be checked by the project management team. 

Preparing portions of complex reports and other submittals, or completing less complex reports in their entirety, as assigned by the project management team. 

Managing your workload, in consultation with your supervisor, to ensure that required assignments are completed within the required timeframes and budget.

 

Your Qualifications: 

 

Requires a Bachelor's degree (Master’s degree preferred) in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or other closely related field. 

The successful candidate must have achieved or be qualified to apply for at least one of the following professional certifications: 

Professional Engineer in New Jersey, New York, or Pennsylvania – If not yet achieved, must have achieved the Engineer in Training certification. 

Licensed Site Remediation Professional in New Jersey  

Requires a minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental investigation and remediation services.  Between 5 and 12 years of experience is preferred. 

Requires broad knowledge of regulations and guidance related to site remediation in New Jersey, including with the Industrial Site Recovery Act (ISRA), Underground Storage Tank (UST) remediation, and the New Jersey Spill Act. 

Knowledge of site remediation under programs and projects overseen by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP), and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is preferred. 

Awareness of when environmental permits may be required is preferred.  

Experience in preparing partial or complete NJDEP Land Use permits is a plus. 

Experience conducting Phase I Environmental Site Assessments and Preliminary Assessments is preferred. 

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with fluency in English. 

Requires computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel. 

Ability to work in a team setting or individually. 

Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle for local and regional travel to sites, Tetra Tech offices, and client offices, on an as-needed basis. 

Willingness to work in one of Tetra Tech’s offices is preferred but not required; hybrid and remote work situations are possible, with the understanding that reporting to an office setting or field setting will be required at times. 

Experience with other software such as AutoCAD, RACER, Microsoft Access, HEC RAS, EnviroInsite, Arc-GIS, BIOCHLOR, ProUCL, or other related software a plus. 

Theoretical knowledge of databases, query and mapping skills preferred. 

AutCAD and GIS working knowledge.
