MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 2- HEAVY/ COASTAL LAFAYETTE REGION This position is a Mobile Equipment Operator 2- Heavy in the Coastal Lafayette Region and reports directly to a Maintenance Foreman. This is a highly skilled position that requires a high degree of precision and safety in the operation of large mobile equipment on and off barges, in soft fluid marsh soils, as well as on solid ground; all in the support of marsh management and erosion control projects as well as facility construction. Operates heavy equipment such as cranes, bulldozers, draglines, tractors, pile drivers, backhoes, excavators, marsh buggies, trucks and boats and provides maintenance and minor repairs to this equipment. Some work requires moderate efforts and some will require brief period in which heavy muscular exertion and strenuous physical exertion in climbing, lifting objects over 50 pounds, or crouching or crawling in restricted areas is required. Travel throughout Louisiana, including overnight stay and early morning departure is required, as well as night work in boats and airboats. Incumbent will be required to stay on remote facilities, tugs and houseboats for up to 8 days and 7 nights at a time and work a revolving 8 days on 6 days off “hitch”. Travel per diem is paid for most overnight travel. Job Concepts Function of Work: To operate heavy mobile equipment to accomplish transportation, maintenance, or construction tasks. Level of Work: Advanced. Supervision Received: General from a Foreman, or other higher level maintenance supervisory or administrative personnel. Supervision Exercised: Functional over lower graded equipment operations or laboring personnel, as needed. Location of Work: Levee Districts; Ports; Terminal Districts; Department of Wildlife and Fisheries; Department of Natural Resources; Office of Forestry; Department of Health and Human Resources; or other agencies throughout the state requiring the regular operation of very heavy mobile equipment. Job Distinctions: Differs from Heavy Mobile Equipment Operator 1 by the requirement for operation of large mobile cranes, draglines, pile drivers, or locomotives as the primary, regular and recurring function of the job. Differs from Foreman and other supervisory jobs by the requirement that actual operation of heavy equipment, rather than full-time supervision, constitutes the major function of the job. Examples of Work NOTE: Operation of one or more of the types of equipment enumerated must be primary, regular, and recurring function of the job. Operates mobile wheeled or tracked cranes with clamshells, hoes, load hooks, draglines, or pile drivers. Operates amphibious marsh buggy mounted mobile dragline. Operates diesel, railroad locomotive. Operates ship unloader unit. May provide guidance to, and oversee work of lower graded operators, workers, and laborers. May be required to operate any other mobile equipment or auxiliary equipment when necessary to accomplish work objectives.
