Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) is the Air Force’s graduate school of engineering and management, as well as its institution for technical professional continuing education. AFIT is committed to providing defense-focused graduate and professional continuing education and research to sustain the technological supremacy of America’s air and space forces. Through their mission to develop and deliver systems engineering and management education, the education faculty rely on interns to support classroom training products, techniques, and tools. Objectives of this effort are to:

Conduct graduate-level research, engineering/technical analyses, technical evaluations, and assessments for AFITEnhance AFIT’s ability to execute their mission of conducting militarily-relevant research, delivering analytic tools to DoD organizations, and producing defense-related publicationsProvide scientific and technical analyses of military and commercial developments including design, development, testing, and evaluation of military-critical technologies

Job Summary

KBR requires a team member for an Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) Contract under the KBR Research and Development Program.  This candidate provides supplementary machining, maintenance, and design support for the research efforts of AFIT Graduate School students and faculty in six academic departments.

Roles and Responsibilities

Set up and operation of machines such as:ProtoTrak mills and lathesCNC Milling CentersWaterjetSurface grindersWire EDMEDM hole burnersCO2/Fiber Laser3D printersMIG & TIG weldersHorizontal and vertical band sawsWoodworking equipmentPaint application equipmentWrite CNC programs using machine controllers, DXFs, conversational software and CAM software to machine parts for projectsHand finishing, alteration, and fitment of machined components and assembliesAssist in design and machining of parts and assemblies using CAD, paper sketches, and verbal directionsConsult with students, staff, and professors to design, manufacture, inspect, and finish components & assembliesTroubleshooting of machined assemblies and mechanical systemsShop maintenance and upkeep.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degreeor Associate degree or Vocational school certificate in Computer Aided Manufacturing or related field with 5 years experience machine or model shop experienceWorking knowledge of basic machining principalsCAD experienceBasic blueprint comprehension and interpretationAbility to apply basic tolerances and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)Ability to communicate with customers via phone, email, Teams, chat, and in personAbility to operate Microsoft Office software & troubleshoot basic computer issuesAbility to use basic measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, indicators)Ability to stand for long periods of timeAbility to walk, push, reach overhead and bend to the floorAbility to exert up to 10 pounds of force regularlyAbility to perform repetitive movements over an extended period of timeAbility to repeatedly lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds; objects up to 50 pounds occasionally

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) Model ShopExperience with SolidWorksHurco Winmax mill setup, programming, and operation.Omax waterjet setup, programming, and operation.CAM Software. (EdgeCam preferred)
