Summary Reclamation is seeking a career professional looking for an opportunity to capitalize on their expertise as a Model Maker Worker. Duty Location: Lakewood, Colorado Responsibilities The Hydraulic Investigations and Laboratory Services Group, located within the Bureau of Reclamation's Technical Service Center in Lakewood, Colorado, has well-equipped and complete laboratory shops, whose craftsmen fabricate highly complex models, test equipment, and instrumentation to support engineering investigations in a 54,000 square foot laboratory space. The working models simulate the hydraulic and mechanical features of water resource structures and systems. Specific duties include: Work with and assist higher graded model makers in fabricating, constructing, modifying, and repairing specialized water-bearing hydraulic models and related equipment that simulate the hydraulic and mechanical features of water resource structures and systems. Fabricate, assemble, and install model components using a variety of trade functions such as heavy carpentry, woodworking, plastic working, and forming acrylic and sheet metal. Identify construction materials for use during projects and cut, bend, form, shape, assemble, and install components made from a variety of materials including wood, acrylic, PVC, steel, aluminum, concrete, foam, and plastics. Work with and assist higher graded model makers on reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, and construction drawings and determining reference points and layouts. Use model drawings and plans to conduct model carpentry, construction, and fabrication work such as constructing water-bearing boxes and conduits, fitting and installing piping, constructing baffles, fabricating acrylic model components, and generating model topographic templates and contours according to plans. Assist with hands-on construction of components and features to obtain precise vertical and horizontal dimensional tolerances to exceedingly fine tolerances. Assist with model layout by grading the model site, establishing horizontal boundaries, setting forms, placing hydraulic structures, and installing numerous model components. Set up and use hand tools for wood, metal, and plastic construction and finishing and power tools such as table saws, band saws, miter saws, radial arm saws, routers, planers, jointers, drill press, breaks, welders, lathes, end mills, punches, and shears. Operate construction equipment such as forklifts, manlifts, hoists, and skid-steers in tight spaces and use come-alongs, winches, pumps, and valves. Assist in maintaining wood shop and other laboratory equipment, including servicing, or arranging for service/repairs of equipment as needed. Support laboratory and field construction and maintenance activities and maintain a safe work environment.
