The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities comprised of four bridges, two tunnels, and two turnpikes across the State of Maryland. Nature of Work: The Motor Carrier Inspector II is responsible for inspecting and weighing commercial motor vehicles to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, including those related to registration, taxation, size, weight, safety, operating authority, and hazardous materials violations. This position is located in the Commercial Vehicle Safety Unit of the MDTA Police Division. The duties and responsibilities associated with this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
+ Weigh, inspect and measure commercial motor vehicles for defects, registration requirements, fuel tax, etc.;
+ Complete inspections and inspection reports following guideline requirements;
+ Record and enforce applicable federal, state, and local law and regulation violations applicable to commercial motor vehicles and drivers;
+ Check cargo of commercial vehicles for hazmat violations and cargo securement;
+ Check commercial motor vehicle driver’s logs, shipping papers, driver’s license and medical certificate;
+ Complete and submit weight reports; and
+ Utilize various computer software programs related to commercial motor vehicle inspection and enforcement.
This position will report directly to the Police Shift supervisor or other higher-level authority. The current vacancy is in Cecil County, MD. This recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies throughout the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA).

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Two years of experience inspecting and weighing commercial motor vehicles to ensure compliance with federal, state and local motor carrier laws.

Licenses & Certifications
+ Employees are assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicles. Employees must possess and maintain a Class C motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. Applicants must list the license number and date of expiration on the application.
+ Employees must successfully complete Maryland State Police approved courses in North American Standard Inspection and Hazardous Materials training and obtain certification for both within one year of employment and must maintain compliance with established.
Additional Information
1. All offers of employment will be conditioned on the result of a medical examination by the agency physician to determine the candidate's ability to perform essential job related tasks.

3. Due to the emergency service performed by employees in this class, mandatory overtime or emergency call back may be required, if the work situation so demands.
4. Employees are required to maintain a reliable communication link (telephone or beeper) for the purpose of emergency call back requirements.
5. Employees may be required to work assignments at any toll facility within the State of Maryland and must provide their own transportation to job sites.
6. Employees in this classification are considered "Essential Employees" and will be required to adhere to all policies and procedures relating to "Essential Employee" status.
7. Candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
8. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
