The Charlottesville Department of Utilities - Water/Wastewater Division is seeking a qualified candidate to join our team as a Motor Equipment Operator II who is highly motivated and who strives for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Commitment, Integrity, Respect, Innovation, and Collaboration. This position in the Department of Utilities performs responsible semi-skilled work in the regular operation of specialized automotive equipment related to water/wastewater services; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Maintenance Crew Supervisor. The preferred hiring amount is between $ 21.94 - $25.23 an hour ( $45,635.20 - $52,478.40 Annually ) . As of March 28, 2024, this position is in the Labor and Trades bargaining unit in accordance with the City’s Collective Bargaining Ordinance (Ordinance No. 22-128 (https://www.charlottesville.gov/DocumentCenter/View/9482/Collective-Bargaining-Ordinance-PDF) ). Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative. The parties are in the process of negotiating the collective bargaining agreement, which will take effect on July 1, 2025. Essential Responsibilities and Duties + Operates a front-end loader. + Operates a back-hoe, trencher and related equipment in the maintenance and construction of roads, water/wastewater, stormwater, or sewer lines; + Operates large tractors, tractors with hydraulic arm mowers and/or bush hog, or other applicable equipment. + Operates one or more of the following depending on assignment: bucket truck, chipper, large mowing equipment in the maintenance of grounds, and/or operates snow equipment and removal of storm debris during inclement weather. + Operates televising and sewer cleaning equipment. + Services, maintains, and makes minor repairs to equipment. + Operates multi-purpose equipment in laying storm drains. + Operates a heavy roller, if applicable. + Operates heavy sweepers in cleaning roads and streets, depending on assignment. + Operates light equipment, medium, and heavy equipment. + Periodically performs semi-skilled manual tasks in connection with the equipment operated, if applicable. + As a trainee, also operates heavy equipment. + Performs related tasks as required. Education, Experience and Skills Minimum Qualifications: + Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED (If no diploma or GED is obtained, must have a minimum of 2 years of direct work experience in the field.). + Must have experience in the operation of motorized equipment. + Must have valid VA driver's license by employment start date. Special Requirements: + Must have the ability to obtain a CDL within 6 months of hire. + Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical. + This position is subject to emergency call; Must be able to be contacted and respond in case of emergency and reside within 40 minutes response time to the City Yard. Skills: General knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing trucks and related medium to heavy construction equipment; general knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; skill in the use of the equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; dependability. Physical Conditions & Additional Information Positions in the Public Utilities Department are subject to mandatory emergency and stand by call and with minimum response time requirements. Our plan has a 5 year vesting period and an employee contribution of 5% of salary. + A Defined Contribution 401a plan in which fixed contributions are paid into an individual's account by the employer, the contributions are invested, returns (positive or negative) are credited to the account, and the account balance is used to provide retirement benefits. The vesting schedule for our 401a plan is 33% after one year of service, 67% after two years of service, and 100% after three years of service. There is no required contribution from salary.
