DESCRIPTION
THE DEPARTMENT
The mission of the Department of Public Works is “to maintain and enhance the City’s infrastructure and environment for the benefit of the public.” The Department’s core services are focused on providing for and maintaining safe and efficient infrastructure for the community, providing for sustainable environmental protection including water quality and waste collection and diversion, and safely and efficiently designing, constructing, delivering, protecting and maintaining services for public facilities and public rights-of-way. The Department has six bureaus: Business Operations, Engineering, Environmental Services, Project Management, Public Service, and Transportation Project Management. The Department has over 580 budgeted positions with an annual operating budget of $250 million and an annual capital improvement program budget of $150 million. POSITION
Under direction, employees performing the position operate a motor driven sweeper that cleans the City's streets in an assigned area. Operates motor-driven street sweeper for bicycle lanes. Dumps load of sweeping debris onto trucks or into containers. Uses radio to communicate route progress, and to coordinate progress with Parking Control Checkers and debris-receiving dump-truck drivers. Maintains sweepers by making minor repairs and adjustments as necessary; lubricates sweepers before each shift, and washes and services equipment after each shift. Checks sweeper with pre- and post - inspection checklist and reports in writing mechanical defects of equipment. May be assigned to special events, special collections, or other related duties as required. The Department of Public Works is currently seeking to fill four (4)open positions.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
+ Follows a prescribed route and operating procedure in cleaning streets and gutters.
+ Dumps loads of sweepings and posts lanterns to warn traffic.
+ Makes minor repairs and adjustments to brooms, chains elevating mechanism, conveyors, spray nozzles; washes and services equipment after each shift.
+ Reports unusual or hazardous street conditions observed.
+ Submits required information.
+ Performs other related duties.

+ A valid Class A or B California motor vehicle operator's license at the time of filing application(proof required)*
+ Three (3) years of paid experience, in the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment and/or mechanical or vacuum street sweepers.
+ Willingness to work various hours and/or shifts including weekends, holidays, overtime, or during emergencies, as required.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
+ Ability to safely operate heavy equipment and follow route instructions.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
+ Knowledge of the operating and maintenance requirements of motorized equipment such as a motor-driven street sweeper or related medium or heavy equipment.
+ Knowledge of the provisions of the California Vehicle Code applicable to the operation of motor sweepers on public roadways.
+ Able to use practical mechanics as related to the adjustment and minor repair of motor-driven street sweepers, and the more common hand tools used by equipment mechanics.
+ Ability to work without immediate supervision in the field and to prepare routine maintenance, mileage, time, and other records and reports.
