Motor Vehicle Operator
Summary This position is located within the Environmental Management Services/Textile Care at the Fargo VA Health Care System in Fargo, ND. Responsibilities The Motor Vehicle Operator will be required to utilize a one-and-a-half-ton truck, gross vehicle weight rating (GVW) of 12000 lbs. for the transporting of textiles back and forth from the hospital to the Textile Care Processing Facility (TCPF) five to six times daily. The Motor Vehicle Operator will drive on the Medical Center grounds and off-station in local area delivering linen for sharing agreements. Will have to use a hydraulic tommy-lift when delivering to off-station agreements that do not have a loading dock. Additionally, is responsible for loading and delivering of carts and baskets to wards, clinics and other areas as assigned. The other major duties include but are not limited to: Ensures proper loading of vehicles so that it is not overloaded and linen carts or other cargo is secured in such a manner as to protect them from weather or from falling off the vehicle; Maneuvers the vehicle in and around congested dock areas, at the hospital and delivery points and must frequently work around other delivery people when completing tasks; Operates dock leveling devices at both laundry docks and routinely, positions the truck so as to make maximum use of these devices; Knows how to securely fasten the various types of cargo carried in the vehicle; Utilizes loading arrangements that are stable and properly balanced to avoid hazardous vehicle conditions or damage to equipment; Performs preventative maintenance on equipment and submits work order requests for work needed; Checks all fluids and fuels of the vehicle as needed/required; Monitors all VA linen needs and reports such needs to the linen clerk to be added to area's delivery cart; Participates in the textile care linen inventory; Occasionally assumes the duties of the WG-5 Laundry Machine Operator or performs other duties as assigned by the Textile Care Manager; and, Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications PHYSICAL EFFORT: The person in this position must be free of physical handicaps that would adversely affect their ability to operate assigned equipment in a safe and proper manner. Must constantly stand, walk, turn, bend and lift in the performance of assigned duties. Must be able to push and pull heavy cargos on and off the vehicle to include linen carts weighing up to 600 lbs. and extreme caution must be exercised in moving them to avoid injury or damage. Will be required to lift hydraulic gate that is excess of 50 lbs. when delivering or picking up linen at sharing agreement locations that do not have loading dock access. WORK CONDITIONS: Work in performed under generally adequate conditions as to light, heat and ventilation but may be exposed at times to extreme temperatures, excreta, disagreeable odors and chemicals. Exposed to constant noise from moving equipment and danger exists from working near steam pipes, moving equipment, chemicals and close quarters. Required to work outside in all types of weather- and weather-related conditions. Must drive, operate equipment and move cargo in extreme weather conditions such as cold, heat, rain, snow, ice, etc. Subject to serious accidents while on public roads as well as cuts, bruises and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or when loading/unloading of vehicle.
