**Position Specific Description**
NextEra Energy is currently seeking a Nuclear Engineer I with firmware, hardware development, and programming experience to join our innovative, high-energy team. The primary focus of this role is to analyze the operation of electronic devices and systems within nuclear facilities, including comprehensive circuit analysis and firmware component understanding. The ideal candidate will have a background in electronics, whether through practical experience or coursework, and the ability to reverse engineer existing electronic systems to comprehend their functionality, limitations, and potential innovations. Additionally, this role includes responsibilities related to procurement engineering to ensure the acquisition of high-quality materials and components.
**Key Responsibilities:**
1. Reverse Engineering:
+ Conduct a thorough understanding of the functionality, design, and operational purposes of electronic systems and devices, including firmware and embedded systems.
2. Circuit, Firmware, and Hardware Analysis:
+ Execute comprehensive circuit, firmware, and hardware analysis to understand internal electronic functions and operations.
+ Identify and understand the interaction between various electrical, firmware, and hardware components and systems.
3. Programming and Hardware Development:
+ Utilize programming skills to understand, modify, and develop hardware for electronic systems.
+ Possess a solid grasp of hardware development processes and tools.
4. Schematic Generation:
+ Develop accurate and detailed schematics of existing electronic systems, providing comprehensive insights into current system operations.
5. Analysis and Report:
+ Analyze the underlying electronics, firmware, hardware, and embedded systems.
+ Provide detailed reports on functionality, strengths, and limitations.
6. Problem Solving and Innovation:
+ Identify potential areas of improvement and suggest innovative engineering, programming, and hardware solutions to improve performance, reliability, and cost efficiency.
7. Collaboration:
+ Work closely with a diverse team of engineers, hardware developers, and software developers to understand the current systems and suggest improvements.
8. Procurement Engineering:
+ Evaluate, select, and procure new materials, components, equipment, and services to ensure compliance with technical specifications and quality standards.
+ Liaise with suppliers to resolve quality and performance issues and ensure the timely delivery of materials and components.
+ Conduct cost-benefit analyses for potential suppliers and materials to ensure cost-efficiency without compromising quality and safety.
+ Maintain comprehensive records of procurement activities, supplier evaluations, and compliance documentation.
+ Support the development of technical specifications for procurement activities and assist in contract negotiations.
+ Commercial Grade Dedication (CGD):
+ Perform CGD processes to ensure that commercial grade items meet all necessary nuclear industry standards and regulatory requirements.
+ Develop and implement dedication plans and procedures for commercial grade items.
+ Item Equivalency Evaluation (IEE):
+ Conduct IEE to ensure that replacement items are equivalent to original items in terms of form, fit, and function.
+ Develop and document equivalency evaluations to support the use of substitute items in the nuclear facility.
**Preferred Qualifications:**
+ Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
+ Basic understanding of nuclear power plant operations and safety principles.
+ Familiarity with industry codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., NRC, INPO, ASME).
+ Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
+ Proficiency with engineering software and tools commonly used in the nuclear industry.
+ Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
+ Commitment to safety culture and continuous improvement.
+ Basic knowledge in programming languages such as C, C++, or Python.
+ Experience in hardware development and understanding of hardware components.
+ Experience in writing and analyzing firmware for embedded systems.
+ Understanding of circuit analysis, including understanding and analyzing digital and analog systems.
+ Basic understanding in the use of electronic testing tools.
+ Experience in procurement, including evaluating suppliers and conducting cost-benefit analyses.
+ Experience with Commercial Grade Dedication (CGD) and Item Equivalency Evaluation (IEE) processes.
+ Problem-solving skills and ability to suggest innovative solutions.
+ Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
+ Internship or co-op experience in a nuclear facility or related industry.
**Job Overview**
Employees in this job conducting extensive engineering analysis of technical decisions to support business unit objectives. Employees in this role perform engineering root cause analysis, develop cost effective countermeasures, and provide expert advice. Individuals develop scope, design criteria, perform data collection, and engineering analysis/design toward completion of large projects. The successful candidate is responsible for completing complex plant engineering tasks that require relevant experience and use of technical engineering principles.

+ Acts as a liaison to interfacing departments
+ Performs engineering and analytical tasks to develop reliable, cost effective recommendations
+ Uses advanced computer models to develop and study solution feasibility
+ Prepares engineering documentation and assist with technical support for licensing and other regulatory proceedings
+ Ensures procured materials and services meet engineering specifications
+ Consults with peer engineers to ensure that solutions meet plant design
+ Performs other job-related duties as assigned
