Job Title: Millwright Mechanic

Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Millwright Mechanic to join our team in a vacuum facility that simulates deep space. In this role, you will work with a variety of pumps, hydraulics, and cryogenic systems. You will operate facility overhead cranes, bucket trucks, man-lifts, forklifts, and portable cranes, and provide rigging for lifting equipment and material. You will also perform welding, operate large mechanical tools, and fabricate complex tubing systems.

ResponsibilitiesOperate facility overhead cranes, bucket trucks, man-lifts, forklifts, and portable cranesProvide rigging for lifting equipment and material, including lifting straps, chain hoists, and come-alongsPerform welding horizontally, overhead, and vertically using various materials including stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, copper, and brassOperate large mechanical tools such as drill presses, power hacksaws, band saws, shears, pipe threaders, brakes, rollers, lathes, and grindersOperate small power tools including air wenches, drills, and grindersLay out and build complex tubing systems using flaring machines and tubing bendersDisassemble, repair, reassemble, and verify various types of valves, valve operators, and pressure regulatorsOperate hydraulic systems, high-pressure gas systems, and other related equipmentWork with environmental test chambers, mass spectrometer leak detectors, and vacuum systemsAssist in the installation and operation of intricate research test packagesFabricate, install, operate, and maintain mechanical control test panels and special test equipmentPerform general maintenance on mechanical vacuum pumping equipment, diffusion pumps, cryo-pumps, steam ejector systems, heat exchangers, and cryogenic vaporizersPerform inspection and evaluation of mechanical equipment and facility operating systemsFabricate, install, and operate cryogenic systems including liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, or liquid heliumWhy Work Here?

Work Environment

The Test Facilities Operation, Maintenance, and Engineering (TFOME) team at the NASA Glenn Research Center provides engineering and technical services in the aeronautics, space power, and propulsion test facilities. This role will be in the Vacuum Facility that simulates deep space, working with a team of 10 lab mechanics. The position is a 9-month contract to hire, with standard working hours from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. During testing periods, candidates will need to rotate to 2nd shift (7.5% shift differential) and 3rd shift (10% shift differential), with the team collaborating to determine the schedule.


Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $32.39 - $32.39
