Natural Resources Educator - Ellicottville, NY
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cattaraugus County has an opening for full-time Natural Resources Educator working 40 hours per week from the Ellicottville, NY office.

The Natural Resources Educator will serve as a member of the Cattaraugus County CCE staff to assist with development, delivery, and evaluation of natural resource educational programs and activities within the County. The educator will specifically be providing education on climate change, energy conservation, watershed, and other natural resource topics.

    

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 
•    Master’s Degree or Equivalent. Bachelor’s Degree plus 4 years transferrable relevant evidence-based research experience may substitute.
•    2 years volunteer or related work experience relevant to the role of the position.
•    Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position. 
•    Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
•    Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read, and write proficiently) in English.
•    Experience, ability, and willingness to work with diverse audiences and maintain cultural sensitivity.
•    Demonstrated experience and ability to communicate effectively, clearly, and tactfully through verbal, written and electronic methods. 
•    Demonstrated experience and ability to work and communicate remotely (including but not limited to phone, email, and video conferencing), if deemed necessary.
•    Demonstrated experience and ability to present effective and relevant educational lessons to target audiences in group settings.
•    Demonstrated experience and ability to work independently and as part of a team with internal and external partners at multiple levels within organizations and across communities.

•    Ability to initiate, plan, organize, implement, and evaluate informal education programs for diverse audiences. 
•    Ability to identify and secure funding that supports programs, including grant writing, developing public and private partnerships.
•    Demonstrated experience, ability, and willingness to work with a high degree of integrity, accuracy, organization, sound professional judgment, and the ability to handle confidential, sensitive information.
•    Demonstrated experience, ability, and willingness to organize, manage, and prioritize multiple tasks, deadlines, requirements, and priorities to complete work in a timely manner and within established deadlines.
•    Proficiency with windows-based software including use of the internet and Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel.
•    Ability to work in a typical office environment which may include lifting, moving, and/or transporting office supplies, work related materials, and equipment with or without accommodation. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 
•    Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read, and write proficiently) in Spanish.
•    Relevant community outreach experience.
•    Experience in teaching non-formal educational programs in energy efficiency and/or renewable energy.
•    Experience with Cooperative Extension or other similar educational organizations.
•    Experience in guiding and collaborating with volunteers. 
•    Experience establishing and collaborating with community stakeholders, especially those with limited income.
•    Experience with technology and online communications for websites, social media platforms, and virtual teaching and outreach.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 
Program Development – 15%    
•    Assist Supervisor with development of educational programs to meet identified needs and diverse interests of participants and volunteers. 
•    Utilize subject matter knowledge to assist with creating innovative programs to address barriers including engaging diverse partners and collaborators.
•    Assist with researching, identifying, and selecting existing resources for the program.
•    Assist with creating or adapting materials and lesson plans that meet local community and individual needs.
•    Assist in making programmatic changes based on program evaluation outcomes to meet the need of diverse program participants. 
•    Maintain working relationships with community members, Cornell University, and other interested groups to develop programs which express the demographics of the community.

Program Delivery - 50%
•    Deliver high quality environmental educational programs and events that address local, regional, and statewide programming priorities using existing program resources and materials.
•    Utilize a variety of educational methods which may include direct teaching, group experiences, media, newsletters, electronic technology, internet, and distance learning to deliver program.
•    Collaborate with community agencies as requested or required to facilitate Horticulture related programs and activities.
•    Serve as subject matter resource utilizing existing subject matter resources and materials to respond to questions about energy efficiency.
•    Provide educational program efforts via mass media including contributing articles to newsletter, utilize emails, phone messages, and website postings. 
•    Assist in maintaining linkages with Cornell and other institutions as part of program delivery.
•    Assist with ensuring program delivery is within scope of statewide Plan of Work.
•    Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell, or other land grant Universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery. 

Program Evaluation - 10%
•    Assist in the creation of program evaluation framework. 
•    Implement program evaluation as designed.
•    Interact with program participants, advisory Committee(s), and/or community agencies to gather program evaluation information.
•    Assist in analyzing collected program evaluation data for reporting and program improvement purposes using standard, established policy, procedure, and methods.
•    Communicate evaluation results and findings.
•    Assist in recommending program changes to strengthen and improve programs.

Administrative Direction - 10%
•    Assist with establishing program goals and priorities.
•    Assist with identifying activities and resources necessary to implement initiatives and projects.
•    Assist with identifying key relationships to build/sustain programming. Assist in identifying community and fiscal resources for program continuance and enhancement.
•    Provide supervisor with program related information to assist the budget development process.
•    Assists with development of grant ideas, programs and narrative based on data collected, and knowledge of the county and the industry.
•    Assist Supervisor in planning for program expenses, communications, and strategic marketing.
•    Assist in developing relationships with appropriate agencies, organizations, industries, and community leaders for the program.
•    Assist with planning the delivery of established educational program goals.
•    Assist with planning effective strategic external and internal communication efforts.

Administrative Management - 5%
•    Assist is solving problems and resolving conflicts that arise in the program, utilizing appropriate policies and procedures.
•    Assist with identifying activities and resources needed to carry out program priorities and goals in consultation and collaboration with supervisor, program committees, staff, Cornell faculty, agency partners, and other community constituents.
•    Assist in monitoring program financial status to ensure compliance with funding requirements, program budget, grant specifications, and adherence to Association strategies/Plan of Work.
•    Support and assist with ensuring volunteer direction and management procedures are followed according to established policies and procedures (VIP) by providing guidance, leadership and resources for volunteers and volunteer leaders including recruitment, screening, orientation, training, evaluation, and management. 
•    Assist in monitoring program to ensure that educational content conforms to policies and objectives of the association and is research based.
•    Assist with effectively managing program budget allocations. 
•    Assist with identifying ways to reduce costs and maximize existing resources within the Association. 
•    Make recommendations to Supervisor regarding program budgetary needs.

Administrative Coordination/Operation - 5%
•    Coordinate identified administrative tasks to support the delivery of established educational program goals, i.e., confirming events; gathering materials and resources for program delivery; and ensuring delivery to offsite program locations. 
•    Coordinate Climate Steward and Energy Navigator volunteer programs.
•    Coordinate special projects and communications/marketing efforts, as directed.
•    Assist with coordinating, compiling, and organizing existing program resources and program materials.
•    Assist with maintaining communication with constituents and the community through variety of methods such as contributing educational articles to program newsletters, e-mails, electronic technology, internet, social media, and website postings.
•    Maintain records of class participants, complete reports, and accurately collect and prepare paperwork as required.
•    Assist with preparation and submitting grants/contracts for new or existing funding.
•    Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts. 
•    Provide data and information as requested to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories on program progress and accomplishments for funders, advisory committees, Board, and others, as necessary.
•    Prepare and submit accurate expense reports, mileage reports, receipts/supporting documentation, and/or vouchers in a timely manner per established policy and procedures. 
•    Maintain confidentiality of all information and data collected, accessed and/or maintained.
•    This position requires the transport of self and/or program materials/resources in performing position responsibilities.

Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%
•    In cooperation with the Supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.
•    Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and trainings as scheduled/required. 
•    Pursue personal growth through expanding personal knowledge of the total organization and through updating techniques and technical skills relating to the position.
•    Carry out assignments and other duties as assigned by supervisor, including but not limited to local fairs, community activities, etc. 
•    Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, collaborating with other staff, general marketing of Cooperative Extension programs and other duties as assigned. 
•    Maintain regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.

POSITION DETAILS

Expected Weekly Hours: 40 hours per week (Full-Time)
Hourly Wage: $18.00 to $21.00 per hour, commensurate with experience
