Major Responsibilities:
Manages the daily care of neonates and high-risk infants which includes the provision of advanced practice clinical skills such as delivery room management of the infant, advanced physical assessment, evaluation of laboratory and clinical data, consulting and collaborating with physicians and other interdisciplinary team members. Attends high-risk and c-section deliveries as team leader except when neonatologist is present.Acts as the primary patient and physician contact. Works one-on-one with the physician to facilitate access to the specialty team for the patient and their family. Provides for continuity of care by ensuring smooth transitions between care settings and tracks patient along the care continuum including post-discharge.Provides complex care coordination, which includes managing a variety of ancillary services, pre-operative plans, discharge planning, and provider referrals. Provides clinical direction to nursing staff regarding the continued care of patients. Follows through with nursing staff to ensure patient receives recommended care.Prescribes, recommends and regulates pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies, including controlled medications that are warranted by patient's diagnosis or changing medical condition.Orders, performs, and interprets procedures, diagnostic tests or studies to manage complex neonatal illnesses /conditions, most commonly, prematurity and respiratory distress. Examples could include: injections, immunizations, wound care, spinal taps, intubation, umbilical line insertion, lumbar punctures, and chest tube, percutaneous arterial line and central line insertion.Provides parental and family support and education as it relates to the infant. Counsels, instructs and educates families on physical and mental health including: disease, home care skills, treatment options, health behaviors, diet, preventive health measures, and growth and development.Interprets and evaluates patient data as authorized by a physician for the purpose of determining management and treatment of patients. Consults with physician as appropriate.Adjusts patient care plan by reviewing and monitoring treatments and therapy plans. Prepares, dictates and signs patient care plans and summaries of patient care. Maintains records according to established standards and guidelines.Manages the neonatal resuscitation team when neonatologist is not present. May act as a team leader during transport to/from facilities, and in collaboration with the neonatologist, provides stabilization of critically ill infants.Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
