Network Backbone Engineer

JOB PURPOSE:

The Stanford University Network (SUNet) Backbone Engineer position will be focused on the design, deployment and operational support of all SUNet infrastructure technologies including but not limited to:  core routing, switching, firewall, load balancing and Virtual Private Network (VPN) services.  With little guidance the engineer will complete daily operations focused tasks such as troubleshooting, both with infrastructure and clients, manage projects of varying scale for network related services (data, voice, AV, etc…) as well as collaborate with and assist other members of the University IT and Stanford IT community.

  

This is a hybrid eligible position.

  

CORE DUTIES:

Manage all phases of large and complex network upgrades or installations including requesting information, evaluating proposals, testing hardware, overseeing the work of others, verifying correct installation, creating and/or updating documentation and coordinating with other departments. Integrate advanced technology developed in or procured by other departments as well as commercial products into the Stanford networking environment. Design, develop, evaluate, acquire, enhance, test, deploy, and manage the network infrastructure for University­ wide network services in a highly complex, multi-vendor, and multi-protocol environment. Develop detailed technical documentation, design and implementation strategies for network management and administration as well as recommend guidelines and policies as necessary. Carry out duties with high degree of responsibility for design integrity, security, and consistency with overall SUNet architecture, while maintaining an enterprise network infrastructure. Provide mentoring and training to lower-level network specialists; act as final escalation point on technical issues. Perform root cause analysis and develop resolutions. Participate in week-long on-call rotations. Lead technical project teams to ensure timely completion and satisfaction of reliability and performance requirements.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience. In-depth experience with the deployment and operational maintenance of large-scale EVPN-VXLAN network implementations, and all the aforementioned and related network technologies. 

  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Excellent oral and written communication skills, with ability to communicate complex technical issues to non-technical users. Current knowledge of and experience with network security fundamentals and practices, necessary to protect client and organizational data. Strong analytical skills for diagnosing network issues, utilizing tools such as packet analyzers and network monitoring systems, and implementing effective solutions quickly to minimize downtime and client impact. Proven ability to manage and potentially lead projects effectively, coordinate with cross-functional teams, and communicate technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders. Familiarity with cloud services (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and their networking components— with a fundamental understanding of both the integration and support of related networking solutions with on-premises infrastructure.

Certifications and Licenses:

Related network technology certifications are desired but not mandatory.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks. Frequently sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation. Occasionally stand/walk, kneel/crawl, and use a telephone. Rarely climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to or <40 pounds. Requires good visual acuity.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

May be exposed to electricity at greater than 240 volts, lasers and noise > 80dB TWA. May need to work in confined spaces such as closets and racks or heights 4-10 feet.

The expected pay range for this position is $151,008 – $181,417 per annum.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.

This is a Hybrid role, with a minimum of two days on-site.  On-site days will be coordinated and scheduled with the hiring Manager.
