Summary:
The role of the Hospital Surgery & Neurology Department Supervisor (Nashville) is to provide direct oversight and support of on the floor staff and daily hospital operations. This individual models servant leadership, providing inspiration, direction and oversight to NVS Surgery and Neurology staff with the goal of driving their professional growth and development. This role provides support by leading to ensure the delivery of quality patient care in a safe and efficient manner while maintaining quality clinical care and business objectives. This individual demonstrates best practice to manage expenses, including cost of goods/inventory and labor costs. This individual will provide direct patient care and work on the floor to observe and understand workflow as needed. This individual should be highly skilled in EQ, follow through, accountability, and team building.
SURGERY & NEUROLOGY DEPARTMENT SUPERVISOR JOB DESCRIPTION
Department Flow
● Scheduling of Anesthesia Technicians, Receiving staff, and Pack/Prep staff
● Tailor the staffing needs to the surgeon/neurologist individual schedules
● Lead and direct the team on order of cases, priority of case management, and directing OR use for both surgery and neurology cases
● Ability to provide safe anesthesia techniques for all ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists)1-5 levels
● Has a vast knowledge of anesthesia concepts and techniques
● Has a vast knowledge of surgical cases and the associated post-operative care
● Ability to locate all surgical equipment and troubleshoot complications
● Oversee/approve time off
● Accept Callouts and communicate with the team
● Keep overtime to minimum
● Streamline communication with team and doctors
● Create reference manual for procedures/protocols
● Implement opening/closing duties for each shift in each subset of surgery/neurology
● Support doctors and needs of department for growth
Department Training
● Ability to train and educate staff on the large variety of anesthetic cases and potential for complications
● Assist the anesthesiologist in providing yearly anesthesia certifying examinations for current anesthesia-trained staff
● Organize a training protocol for onboarding new staff in each subset of surgery and neurology
● Participate in general training of new staff for each respective department
● Ability to train individuals in performing MRI & CT scans
● Create electronic manual explaining common surgical procedures and medications
● Create electronic manual explaining department protocols/instructions for procedures
● Educate and hold team accountable on hospital protocol and procedures
● Improve/train skill set/levels
● Regularly meet with doctors/leaders in other departments to improve communication throughout hospital

Other Duties
● Department Meetings – Monthly (CE, announcements, improvement/ideas)
● Attend the surgery/neurology/anesthesia doctor’s meetings
● Organize and direct department inventory counts
● Complete 90 day and annual reviews
● Direct working interviews/dept externs
● Facilitate conversations with employees regarding feedback, improvements, and requirements for ideal employee qualities at NVS
● Manage/assist with screening, working interviews, and hiring
● Manage/assist with corrective action and terminations
● Honor confidentiality regarding staff, clients and patient care
● Work with other team leaders to best implement and allocate staff to support hospital

Physical/Environmental Requirements: This job classification requires that the applicant be capable of standing continuously for up to 6 hours without a break, sitting, lifting up to 50 pounds, pulling up to 50 pounds, carrying up to 50 pounds, reaching, speaking, seeing and hearing. This job classification also involves repetitive use of hands, wrists and arms. Individuals must be able to meet the minimum dexterity requirements for the position. Qualified applicants must have above average keyboarding and computer skills, as well as the ability to use a keyboard and view a computer up to 12 hours per day. This job classification involves exposure to controlled substances, medications, chemotherapy, radiation and various cleaning chemicals.
