Job Summary The Division of Extension and Engagement’s Partnerships Unit is seeking a New Beginnings for Tribal Students Coordinator. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position with grant funding through August 31, 2027. The New Beginnings for Tribal Students Program Coordinator is a member of the OSU Division of Extension and Engagement’s (division) Partnerships Unit which includes Open Campus and Juntos programs. The Associate Vice Provost for Partnerships supervises this New Beginnings for Tribal Students Coordinator. This position is funded by the New Beginnings for Tribal Students ( NBTS ) grant. This NBTS grant is funded through August 31, 2027. The USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture makes available competitive grants to land-grant colleges and universities to provide support specifically for Tribal students. This New Beginnings for Tribal Students Coordinator assists and collaborates with Open Campus and Juntos leadership to meet the needs of Native and Tribal communities and students as well as assists with providing programming and outreach services to engage Native and Tribal students and families. The primary outreach responsibilities of this position: + Management of NBTS programming including recruitment of students, building collaborations/partnerships with key stakeholders, and supporting students’ participation with the program components. This NBTS Coordinator collaborates with a team to design, develop, maintain, and carry out educational programming and outreach activities to serve Native and Tribal communities and students in an accessible, inclusive, equitable, and socially just manner. This includes complying with Civil Rights and Language/Visual Access regulations. Key Responsibilities 70% – Program Development, Student Outreach, and Relationships Student Engagement and Program Coordination + Lead outreach efforts to recruit Native and/or Tribal undergraduate students for the NBTS summer mentorship cohort. + Coordinate and guide summer cohort activities, ensuring an engaging and supportive experience for participants. + Create accessible environments that make space for a range of learners and provide reasonable accommodations. + Assist students in identifying mentors and securing internships, as needed. + Network with other OSU programs and participate in in-person events on campus supporting Indigenous students. + Develop in-person events for current and past NBTS students. e.g., an optional field trip on a weekend in the summer, NBTS program celebration in September. + Chaperone/mentor students attending conferences. + Network across campus, and beyond, to grow the NBTS program. + Work with a team to develop a vetted online learning module for mentors and others working with Indigenous students, tailored to NBTS needs. + Work with Tribes to connect students to opportunities for internships and employment with Tribes. + Travel/driving is required to perform these responsibilities. Program and Event Leadership + In collaboration with the Partnerships Unit Leadership team and the NBTS Steering Committee plan and implement the annualCultural Awareness and Mentor Training Seminarto enhance cultural competency and mentor-student relationships. + Collaborate with NBTS steering committee members to review and update the Evaluation Plan, ensuring alignment with program goals and objectives. + Represent OSU Extension by attending national NBTS committee meetings to stay informed of program developments and share successes. Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation of Annual Indigenous Youth Summer Camp + Lead planning, implementation and evaluation of the Indigenous Youth Summer Camp. + Recruit speakers, instructors, field guides, mentors and participants for the NBTS camp. + Organize and facilitate monthly planning team meetings including primary planning partners; the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians ( CTCLUSI ), faculty (academic/professional faculty) from the OSU Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Sciences Department’s Environmental Leadership for Youth Program, Chemeketa Community College, and other steering committee members. + Curate youth roster and communicate with families. + Seek funding to support the camp in future years. 20% – Coordination of the New Beginnings for Tribal Students ( NBTS ) Grant Grant and Budget Management + Develop a strong understanding of the NBTS grant and budget framework. + Work with OSU Extension financial officers to track expenses and provide budget updates to the NBTS steering committee and program leadership. + Management of stipends to be paid to students, mentors, and other volunteers. + In collaboration with the Partnership unit leadership team, Extension and Engagement grant team, and the NBTS Steering Committee facilitate Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with grant partners, including Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians ( CTCLUSI ); Chemeketa Community College; and potential new partners. Steering Committee Coordination + In collaboration with the leadership team, coordinate quarterly NBTS steering committee meetings, including logistics, agenda planning, and follow-up: + Record detailed meeting notes with action items. + Communicate follow-up items to committee members. + Organize sub-committee meetings, as needed. + Provide updates to the steering committee and USDA - NIFA on program achievements, plans, and challenges. + Seek guidance from the steering committee on outreach, networking, and problem-solving. 10% – Meetings & Trainingsand Other Duties + Attend scheduled Partnerships Unit meetings and training. + Attend training opportunities to build basic knowledge and consistent skills to use digital communications, marketing, and engagement technologies relevant to position duties. + Complete the division’s civil rights training session(s). + Perform other duties as assigned. What You Will Need + Bachelor’s Degree in fields related to the work, could include Indigenous studies, education, natural resources or related field. Degree must be completed by the start date. + A deep understanding of cultural traditions and norms of Native and/or Tribal audiences especially through lived experience. + Three (3) years of demonstrated work experience (paid or volunteer) supporting community programs that serve children, youth, or adults. + Life or work experience that demonstrates an understanding of Tribal sovereignty, Tribal history locally/nationally, and self-determination in the Pacific Northwest. + A commitment to collaborative and respectful learning and working environments that are safe, inclusive, and welcoming. + Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate successfully with a diverse audience. + Demonstrated skill to work with diverse teams. + General knowledge and ability to use computers, including proficiency with information technology, professional office software and collaborative work platforms. This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months. This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030. What We Would Like You to Have + Demonstrable experience working in college access programs, particularly with students from diverse backgrounds. + Experience working on nationally funded grant programs. + Experience working with youth programs, particularly with a trauma-informed lens. + Work experience in Oregon and the Oregon K-12 and higher education systems. Working Conditions / Work Schedule This position may be located in an Extension Service office or other OSU facility in Oregon, and requires the ability to travel/drive to communities across Oregon. A regular presence on the OSU Campus in Corvallis is required to build and maintain strong relationships with students and other Indigenous-serving partners and programs.
