New Product Introduction (NPI) Engineer

We are seeking a NPI Engineer to handle the introduction of crystal components, optical elements and sub-assembly designs. Supports manufacturing engineering of prototype components and assemblies. Interfaces with design engineers at Coherent locations worldwide throughout the qualification process at our Budd Lake NJ Facility.

Essential Responsibilities

Reviews requests for prototypes with respect to feasibility and manufacturability including evaluation of material choices mainly for nonlinear optical materials,  phase matching conditions process tolerances and test requirements.  Identifies technical risks based on thorough understanding of intended applications including various types of laser platforms and takes action to mitigate such risks.  Hands-on, capable of building and testing prototype components and assemblies.  Works along the manufacturing engineering team on characterization of crystal materials and assembly components.  Creates documentation for designs as needed including technical drawings.  Coordinates activities with planning, R&D, and manufacturing teams to optimize time from receipt of initial request to release of products to production.  Ensures that products shipped meet specifications and quality requirements.  Organizes and leads phase gate reviews and pro-actively manages lifecycle status of parts.  Maintains reporting systems to identify opportunities for improved time to market; develops and implements processes and methods accordingly.

Education and Work Experience 

Bachelors in engineering, physics or material science required   3+ years experience in related industry such as photonics, lasers, and nonlinear optics principles and material/light interaction Experience with Laser Systems, Optics, Project Management, giving technical presentations Good Working Knowledge of manufacturing methods Strong communication skills Capable of coordinating and executing on multiple projects / tasks Experience/Interest in customer care and managing customer requests Good understanding of analytical equipment for optical/physical material characterization Ability to work independently and to interface with large teams, working across departmental boundaries Experience with Solidworks a plus
