The Newborn Screening Supervisor of the Molecular/Core unit serves to supervise scientific research and analytical activities. The Molecular/Core unit uses state-of-the-art laboratory methods to detect congenital and heritable disorders in newborn babies using dried blood spots. This position will: + Direct and assist in performance of state-of-the-art laboratory methods to screen for congenital and heritable disorders in newborn babies. + Improve and add testing for existing and new disorders on the Minnesota’s testing panel in order to provide early identification of infants that are at risk for rare but serious health conditions. + Evaluate and implement advances technologies to continually improve the Newborn Screening Laboratory. + Incorporate continuous quality control/quality assurance measures to fulfill accreditation requirements + Represent MDH in public forums, including presentations at symposiums and conferences. This position requires working one Saturdays per month in exchange for a day off during the week. This position also requires working some holidays. Only applicants whose resumes clearly demonstrate fulfillment of each of these minimum qualifications will be considered for this position._ + Bachelor’s in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution. + 4 years of clinical laboratory training or experience that includes: chemistry, hematology, and/or virology. + Supervisory or other leadership experience OR completion of a leadership development program (such as Emerging Leaders Institute, etc). Previous experience below is required to be considered as a candidate and will be assessed during the interview process: + Experience with laboratory quality assurance practices. + Experience researching, evaluating, and implementing biochemical and molecular laboratory methods. + Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical information to diverse audiences and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders. A master’s degree in clinical chemistry, biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, public health, laboratory science, or related science filed may substitute for 18 months of experience, and a PhD for 2 years. **Preferred Qualifications** + Newborn Screening Laboratory testing experience. + Human relation skills sufficient to achieve effective working relationships within the agency and externally. + Good judgement, integrity, diplomacy, critical thinking, and problem solving. + Population based high throughput testing and molecular data interpretation. + Quality control interpretation and calculating statistics such as false positive rate, positive predictive value, etc. **Physical Requirements** Occasional transportation of up to 30 pounds. **Additional Requirements** This position requires successful completion of a background check and employment reference check.
