WLNS-TV, the CBS affiliate in Lansing, Michigan seeks a curious person who loves writing and telling stories. The News Reporter/Producer will play a key role on our team by creating fresh local content for our website. This is a rare opportunity for a position with Lansing’s leading news outlet. Work with the experienced team at WLNS-CBS, WLAJ-ABC, ELAJ-CW, and WLNS.COM.  You will spend time in each department, learning all aspects of the business, as well as get hands-on experience in the production of live newscasts, and the digital news operation.  The news business is 24/7, so you will join our team on some nights and weekends. Network with industry leaders in the nation’s largest broadcast television company, get hands-on experience and get paid.

Write stories and update the website with fresh contentCreate engaging social media posts that will get people's attentionUse push alerts to send out breaking newsArranges and conduct interviews with people who can provide information about stories both live and tapedReviews copy and corrects errors in content, grammar and punctuation, following prescribed editorial style and formatting guidelinesReviews and evaluates notes taken about event aspects to isolate pertinent facts and detailsDetermines a story’s emphasis, length and format, and organizes material accordinglyResearches and analyzes background information related to news stories to be able to provide complete and accurate informationGathers information about events through research, interviews, experience or attendance at political, news, sports, artistic, social or other functionsPitches stories to news managers and news producers which are relevant to the local communityReceives assignments and evaluates leads and tips to develop story ideasDiscusses issues with producers and/or news managers to establish priorities or positionsChecks reference materials such as books, news files or public records to obtain relevant factsRevises work to meet editorial approval or to fit time requirementsProduces and presents reports for all platformsEnsures that all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production qualityWrites stories for the web and other eMedia platformsInteracts with viewers/users on social media sitesPerforms special projects and other duties as assigned

Requirements & Skills:

Should have or be working towards Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or a related field or have an equivalent combination of education and work-related experienceFluency in EnglishExcellent communication skills, both oral and written with the ability to ad lib when requiredProficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipmentAbility to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneouslyValid driver’s license with a good driving recordFlexibility to work any shift
