Nuclear Engineer I or II – Design Mechanical/Civil McGuire Nuclear Station

Summary

Duke Energy is seeking a Nuclear Engineer I or II Mechanical, preferably with experience working in a utility industry, or heavy industrial manufacturing field and experience working with: pumps, valves, heat exchangers etc.  This Mechanical Engineering position will be located in Huntersville, NC in the Carolinas Nuclear Generation/McGuire Nuclear Station/Mech & Civil Design Engineering team organization that supports nuclear generation stations in North and South Carolina.

Responsibilities

Support mechanical technical design and project coordination.Specify vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, rotating equipment and other process equipment.Learn to prepare thorough and accurate engineering change packages, specifications, calculations and drawings associated with the resolution of plant technical problems.General understanding of Project Schedules and Budgets as well as providing weekly project status updates.Accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activitiesSupports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Nuclear Engineer I

Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering0-2 years of engineering experience

Nuclear Engineer II

Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering2-4 years of engineering experience

Additional Preferred Qualifications

In addition to required degree, 3-6 years related work experience within a utility company or Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) firm.Registered Professional Engineer (PE)ASME Code knowledge for pressure vessels and piping systemsBackground in heat exchangers, pumps, valves and rotating equipmentUnderstanding of engineering theories and principles in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and hydraulic fundamentals.Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendationsUnderstanding of basic principles of project managementPassing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals ExamStrong communication skills required to provide effective inter-discipline coordination on projects.Ability to independently research engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.Experience with general computer skills including Windows, e-mail, and Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) and engineering products (e.g. Mathcad, AutoCAD).Good written and oral communication skills.

Specific Requirements

Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experienceIn lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.   Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.Occasional overnight travel.

Working Conditions

Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
