Position Purpose

The Nuclear Medicine technologist can examine any human body part for use in the diagnosis of medical problems with the assistance of radioactive materials. Night/weekend call rotation is required.  Ages served range from newborn to geriatric.

What You Will Do

Follows sterile technique and can assist the RN in monitoring HR/BP during these procedures if necessary.Assesses each patient for proper prep/scanning procedure for each ordered exam.Follows exam protocols that have been set in place for the Nuclear Medicine Department.Follows the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) rules and regulations on the safe handling/disposal of radioactive isotopes.Assumes responsibility for observing safety precautions when handling patients for radioisotope procedures and injections to facilitate treatment.Demonstrates proper placement on body of radiation measuring devices that are set forth by regulations.Assists physician or radiologists with specialized procedures.Communicates with physicians, nursing units, ancillary caregivers, patients and families regarding the patient’s diagnostic plan of care.Utilizes critical thinking in daily and emergent assessment of proper exam protocol.

Minimum Qualifications

Active Registered Nuclear Medicine Technologist (NMT), MT or RT (R).  Iowa Department of Health permit to practice necessary if ARRT.Must be a graduate from an accredited Radiology program, Medical Technology Program, Nuclear Program or have completed an 18-month IDPH approved hospital program.Must be BLS certified within 3 months of hire.Must be knowledgeable and have an understanding of all radionuclide detection devices and computers.Must be knowledgeable of Iowa Department of Health rules and regulations. Working weekend, holiday, and rotating shifts as well as on-call is required.Must possess excellent organizational and communication skills.Must be capable of problem solving, critical thinking and assessment of proper patient protocols.Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission and vision, goals, and values of Trinity Health.
