Nuclear Med Technologist (As Needed)

Shift: Hourly on call, Days, Rotating weekend, with Call rotation

Reporting to the Director of Radiology/Imaging with accountability to the team facilitator and the team, performs diagnostic Nuclear Medicine procedures; monitors patient's condition; maintains department equipment and supplies.

1. Performs diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures assigned by the team facilitator, operates nuclear medicine units.

2. Explains examination procedures to patient and provides necessary instructions.

3. Assists patients from wheelchairs and stretchers on and off the imaging table. Positions patients for examination and applies immobilization devices and compression bands, as needed.

4. Frequently monitors patient's condition in the Nuclear Medicine area; reports any critical change in the patient's condition to the Radiologist or department nurse.

5. Administers correct radioisotope to the patient with the proper dosage according to department policy and procedure. Accurately documents the dosage on dose sheet in compliance with IEMA regulations.

6. Retrieves medications that are not controlled substances.

7. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to assess, treat, and care for all age groups of patients (neonatal through geriatric) patients; implements assessment/treatment/care based on the developmental stages of the patient. Involves family/guardian in plan of care and conducts patient and family education, as appropriate, considering the developmental needs of the patient.

8. Labels images with patient's medical record number, date, and last name; verifies patient's scan with radiologist regarding proper imaging record.

9. Participates in departmental Quality Improvement activities.

10. Maintains equipment and accessories; cleans when needed; reports all broken and malfunctioning equipment to supervisor.

11. Maintains adequate levels of supplies; stocks area with supplies and orders additional supplies, as needed; orders cleaning service for area, as needed.

12. Assumes responsibility for own professional growth by attending Continuing Education classes, seminars, and by reading professional journals

13. Performs on-call duties according to scheduled rotation.

14. Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies, and procedures.

1. Graduate of an accredited Nuclear Medicine program; thorough knowledge of radioisotopes.

2. Current registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).

3. Current Illinois Emergency Management Agency license (IEMA) .

4. Knowledge of and/or experience in the correct use of body mechanics.

5. Current CPR certification from American Heart Association.
6. The interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with patients who may be anxious or confused and to interact with physicians and other hospital staff.

7. The analytical ability to determine proper patient positioning and to determine the correct radioisotope and quantity to administer to patient.

8. The communication skills necessary to inform patients regarding examination procedures.

9. The ability to use a computer to perform the representative functions of the job.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:1. Moderate physical effort. Requires continuous standing or sitting. May require frequent lifting or moving of average weight material and occasionally lifting or moving heavy weight material in difficult work positions.

2. Flow of work and character of duties involves concentrated attention much or all of the time along with manual coordination.
