The nuclear power life cycle includes the need for safe, cost-effective management of used fuel and high-level waste (HLW).
The Used Fuel and High-Level Waste Management (UF&HLW) program examines complex scientific and technical issues affecting used fuel and HLW management, including wet and dry storage, used fuel interim and long-term storage, and used fuel transportation. Research related to these issues informs industry, regulatory, and national/international decisions on waste management, supports safe long-term storage of used fuel and associated components, establishes the technical bases for storage and transportation of high-burnup used fuel, encourages collaboration to identify and fill gaps in knowledge and technology, and provides insight into technical advances required to develop an integrated waste management solution.
This position will be responsible for significant work for the Used Fuel and High-Level Waste area to the benefit of the worldwide nuclear industry. Research activities related to neutron absorber materials, criticality prevention, used nuclear fuel decay heat, and dry fuel storage optimization or aging management.
