About this position

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) provides the service of advanced practice registered nursing. Advanced practice registered nurses integrate education, research, management, leadership and consultation into clinical roles and function in collegial relationships with nursing peers and other professionals who influence the health environment. The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a licensed registered nurse who, through advanced education at a graduate level and through clinical experience, is recognized as an expert practitioner within a specialty population (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2017). The scope of practice may include the care of neonates, infants, children, young adults, adults, and older adults. The CNS provides holistic, compassionate care to customers throughout the lifecycle using three spheres of influence: patient/client, nursing personnel, and organization/network. A primary goal of the CNS includes continuous improvement of patient outcomes and nursing care (APRN Consensus Work Group & National Council of State Boards of Nursing [NCSBN] APRN Advisory Committee, 2008).

Variation of duties may result based on the assigned customer care unit(s), departments, or population. This may include differences in the specific clinical skills required of the CNS.

Requirements

Education

• Master's or Doctoral degree in nursing from a nationally accredited program for Clinical Nurse Specialists that prepares them to sit for national certification as a clinical nurse specialist.
• Additional specialty clinical study in specific focus area desirable as appropriate to specialty
   

Experience

Experience
• Three to five years of current clinical experience in area of clinical practice preferred.
• Three to five years as practicing APRN as a CNS preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Demonstrated leadership, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
• Commitment to active participation in shared accountability and decision making for the continuous improvement of nursing practice.
• Demonstrated skill proficiency in computer literacy or use of variety of software program (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)  

Licensure/Certification

• Current licensure as an RN
• National Board certification as a CNS by accreditation Board as approved by the State of Minnesota
• Specialty certification and preparation as optional, but recommended, and should follow the ANA Criteria for Recognition as a Nursing Specialty
• Prescriptive Privileges granted by the State of Minnesota if appropriate and as required by department needs.
• Registration/licensure as a CNS as APRN in the State of Minnesota.
