Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Reporting to the Program Manager of Paediatrics Medicine and in collaboration with the Medical Director of the Gastroenterology, the Gastroenterology Nurse Clinician is responsible for the planning, deliver, and coordination of education sessions and learning materials for nursing and other health care professionals for the Gastroenterology Division and acts as a patient advocate, care facilitator and clinical nursing resource for patients with gastroenterology disorder diagnosis and their families. The Gastroenterology Nurse Clinician acts as an expert clinical resource to nursing and other health care professionals within British Columbia Children’s Hospital (BCCH) and throughout the province by teaching nursing practices related to Gastroenterology disorders to nursing staff, other health professionals, as well as patients and their families. The Nurse Clinician is responsible for assigning direct care responsibilities to other nursing staff in accordance with established policies, standards, procedures and philosophy at BCCH. The Nurse Clinician provides and coordinates nursing practice activities and education related to the care of patients with Gastroenterology disorders on inpatient units and ambulatory care settings.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1. Provides education to nursing staff, students and healthcare professionals specific to Gastroenterology Disorders by developing, evaluating and revising educational materials to enhance health care professional’s knowledge of management of Gastroenterology Disorders. Presents education sessions and rounds and evaluates learning needs of nursing staff and other health professionals.
2. Participates in orientation and continuing education of nursing staff and students by role modelling, preceptoring and participation in formal teaching of education sessions to nursing staff and physicians through lecture and demonstration and follows up on nursing staff and students to ensure that materials have been learned correctly.
3. Serves as an expert clinical resource and provides education for health care professionals in the community and non-tertiary settings throughout the province of BC and Yukon Territory by facilitating materials and courses, seminars, telephone consultation and mentoring to increase the health care professional’s knowledge and understanding of Gastroenterology Disorders in children, youth and families.
4. Provides consultation and education to Nursing Support Services to direct appropriate resources and support for children, youth and their families with Gastroenterology Disorders in day care settings, school programs and the community.
5. Participates in the conduct, use and/or dissemination of nursing research and quality improvement activities in collaboration with the Medical Director for Gastroenterology Division or Nursing Practice Leaders; identifies issues and questions requiring research to advance evidenced based practice for children and youth with a diagnosis of Gastroenterology disorder.
6. Provides input to the Program Manager and Medical Director for Gastroenterology Division regarding policies, procedures, and operational requirements by observing service needs and providing spoken or written suggestions which address patient and family needs and promote effective use of resources.
7. Develops, in collaboration with the Medical Director for Gastroenterology Division, resources and strategies as required to increase access to clinically relevant education on Gastroenterology Disorders and care in British Columbia.
8. Oversees the delivery of care for the Gastroenterology Disorders patient population followed at BCCH by coordinating patient care delivery in other centres in British Columbia, ensuring provision of direct patient care for patients, and making adjustments in patient treatment schedules with accountability for follow-up and patient outcomes.
9. Collaborates with nursing staff, medical staff, health care disciplines and community agencies to plan patient care in the hospital, clinic and community setting.
10. Initiates and coordinates assessment and post assessment referrals; responds to patient family and health care member’s enquiries; and liaises with other support and diagnostic health services in coordinating patient referrals.

12. Provides direct patient care and family teaching related to Gastroenterology Disorders using the family centred care to assess and teach newly diagnosed patients and their families, addresses ongoing educational needs, facilitates transition planning for youth and provides telephone support on inquiries from families.
13. Uses the nursing process and specialized nursing knowledge of Gastroenterology Disorders to provide primary nursing care and/or case management for patients/families. Teaches patients and families about gastroenterology disorders in inpatient and ambulatory settings and provides ongoing follow-up education for families on an out patients basis. This may include telephone contact, individual appointments and regular workshops.
14. Collects, documents and maintains patient health care information regarding nursing observations, intervention, teaching and evaluation of nursing care.
15. Collaborates in the planning of patient care with nursing staff, medical staff and other health care professionals to plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for the patient and families in the community setting.
16. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
• Three years’ recent, related experience, preferably in an ambulatory care or community health service setting, including experience in developing and delivering educational programs for staff, patients and their families with an emphasis on chronic diseases management or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
• Broad knowledge of the etiology, physiology, manifestations, and treatment of Pediatric Gastroenterology Disorders.
