Nurse Clinician-Maternal Fetal Medicine

Job Summary: The Nurse Clinician-Maternal-Fetal Medicine utilizes discretion and independent judgment to provide developmentally appropriate and age-specific direct and indirect patient care and treatment management in the out patient setting.  Coordinates and oversees flow of patient appointments during daily operations.  Serves as a resource to high-risk obstetrical patients and to referring and consulting physicians.  Utilizes disease-specific knowledge base and the nursing process (assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation) to provide whole person care in the out patient environment.  Ensures continuity of care across the continuum by coordinating and case managing the high risk pregnant patient, e.g., pre-admission and post hospitalization.  Collaborates with other healthcare team members and participates in team conferences to coordinate implementation of treatment plan recommendations, scheduling appointments, etc.  Utilizes interpersonal skills to maximize excellence in customer service, safe patient care, and professionalism.  Contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population.  Carries out research protocols for perinatal and maternal-fetal medicine.  Performs other duties as needed.

Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required.  Minimum two years experience in labor and delivery clinical nursing and one year experience in ambulatory obstetrical setting required.  Minimum one year of the required experience shall have been in providing nursing care for patients with the disease(s) or related condition(s) for which the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Diagnostic and Treatment Center is established.

Knowledge and Skills: Able to read; write legibly; speak in English with professional quality; use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position; troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment; perform technical patient care activities.  Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate; accept direction.  Able to communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; work well under pressure; problem solve; forecasting assessing/evaluating; spatial/form perception; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; work with minimal supervision.  Able to distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place/patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position.  Discern temperature variances through touch.

Licensures and Certifications: California Registered Nurse (RN) license and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; Certified Nurse Midwife preferred; Valid driver's license required at time of hire with automobile insurance.
