I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Creates an atmosphere conducive for learning.
2. Conducts an educational needs assessment for area(s) of responsibility on a regular basis.
3. Designs, organizes, implements, and evaluates orientation, in-service, and continuing education programs for staff in assigned areas.
4. Develops expertise of nursing staff with patients and patient populations managed on assigned unit(s).
5. Develops curricula, instructional materials, tests, and evaluation tools, evaluates commercially produced materials, and maintains current educational supplies and equipment. Makes changes to the curricula based on feedback and current clinical and/or educational evidence.
6. Promotes evidence-based educational methods and technologies that support development of nursing expertise.
7. Ensures that staff meets required competencies, both annual and unit based, for area of practice.
8. Serves as a role model and resource for less experienced nurse educators.
9. Develops precepting skills of staff nurses in assigned area(s) and oversees charge nurse orientation for nurses new to that role.
10. Serve as a consultant to / facilitator for nursing governance councils, nurse leaders, and other departments’ personnel in the planning of formal and informal learning activities within the hospital as requested.
11. Coordinates student clinical experiences with faculty from schools of nursing and other disciplines that utilize our clinical site for education.
12. Participates in educational strategic planning efforts for the Department of Nursing.
13. Presents papers, posters or workshops at scholarly meetings.
14. Establishes and maintains effective communication within areas of responsibility and with other departments.
15. Assists staff nurses in applying educational principles to patient education sessions.
16. Maintains required data, records, and statistics for administrative, regulatory, and evaluation purposes for educational programs delivered.
17. Keeps current on best practice standards of nursing practice and education. Identifies policies, standards, and practices not in compliance with current standards and communicates needed revisions through the nursing leadership and governance structures.
18. Supports/participates in current research activities that affect area(s) of current responsibility or specialty area of interest/expertise.
19. Assists nurse managers and other nursing staff with projects and activities to support the nursing area(s) of responsibility.
20. Serves as a consultant to nursing staff in the evaluation of process improvement activities.
21. Promotes a culture of safety within the organization. Follows or recommends revisions of established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.

II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Current RN license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
2. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
3. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Instructor certification.
4. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Instructor certification.
Preferred:
1. Bachelor's of Nursing.
2. Master's degree in nursing education or related healthcare field.
Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Ability to adhere to regulatory and safety standards.
2. Knowledge of current nursing and specialty regulations and requirements.
3. Knowledge of adult learning tools, theory and development.
4. Ability to facilitate work groups.
5. Demonstrated experience in curriculum design, development and delivery.
6. Demonstrated experience in quality management principles.
7. Effective group process and team building skills.
8. Demonstrated skills in didactic presentations, clinical skills assessment methodology and project management.
9. Strong interpersonal skills and ability in conflict resolution.
10. Working knowledge of computer software programs, desktop publishing and audio-visual equipment and materials.
11. Outstanding communication skills in written and spoken English.
Preferred:
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
