Nurse Educator

The Nurse Educator is a leader in the clinical management of a selected patient population and is responsible for providing education programs of varying length and complexity for the staff at Ellis Hospital.  These educational programs include orientation, inservice, and continuing education programs for all skill levels within unit/service-line structure.

Leadership is evidenced through collaborative program design, implementation, and evaluation; as well as through education consultative services, participation in departmental and interdepartmental committees, and commitment to enhancing personal professional growth and facilitation of staff engagement in process improvement and department committees. These actions are guided by hospital mission, vision, values and goals.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 Education:  Current Registration and Licensure as a professional Registered Nurse in New York State.  A BSN from an accredited school is required; MSN is preferred. 

Experience:  A minimum of 3 - 5 years of relevant clinical experience is required.  Previous educational or leadership experience is preferred. 

Certification:  Certification in specialty for population and / or for nursing professional development is preferred or completed within 2 years of hire.      

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:

Clinical Accountability:  Expert in the Nursing Process and knowledgeable of resources for self and staff to meet needs for patient population.  Coaches and guides staff in assessment, Nursing diagnosis and treatment of health/illness states, disease management, health promotion, and prevention of illness and risk behaviors among individuals, families, groups and communities based on the focused population.  Utilizes Evidence Based Practice and incorporates research into planning. Develops Orientation, Residency, Preceptor and other educational programs to facilitate the development of new hires and graduate nurses.  Provides coaching support to preceptors and staff / students to support learning environment and facilitate on-boarding process. Career Development: Provides coaching and mentoring to staff to create an environment that empower nurses to develop caring, evidence-based practice to alleviate patient distress, facilitate ethical decision-making, and respond to diversity.  Facilitation:  Promotes professional development in others, encouraging participation in professional organizations.  Encourages participation of all team members when leading groups. Engages front-line staff in opportunities for growth through participation in organizational and department teams / committees. Effective communication and interpersonal skills demonstrated through written, oral and body language. Consultation:  Links others to appropriate, relevant resources for development and practice issues.  Evaluates opportunities for improvement and provides guidance for achieving outcomes.  Guides development of educational programs for staff to achieve goals. Lean principles are applied to process improvement activities. Education:  Incorporates Evidence Based Practice and Research into educational offerings.  Utilizes principles of Adult Learning for program development and appropriate to audience.  Utilizes evaluations for program improvement. Change Agent:  Incorporates changes into learning.  Facilitates adoption through development of Champions on units. Leadership: Adheres to regulatory agency standards.  Advocates for support of nursing practice and patient population needs.  Demonstrates sensitivity to ethical, cultural and spiritual needs of clients and facilitates ethical discussions.  Participates in Magnet Committees / Teams. Research:  Participates in research as investigator, collaborator, translator, integrator, and evaluator. Program and Project Management: creatively designs and implements innovative programs to achieve outcomes.  Evidence of team building through collaboration with other disciplines and front-line staff.  Adheres to hospital policies and procedures related to: Mandatory education Annual health assessment

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Should be able to push/pull, lift/move 35 lb., be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers.  Mobility requirements may include the ability to be stationary at a workstation for a prolonged period time in addition to being able to squat or be mobile for a reasonable length of time and distance.  Communication requirements include the ability to comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to communicate and read the English language.

Salary Range: $36.07-54.10/hour                  Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
