Summary This position is located in the Red Lake Indian Health Service Hospital at Red Lake, MN in the Bemidji Area. The purpose of the position is to provide professional emergency room nursing care to patients in a general hospital and ambulatory care setting. This position requires licensure as a registered nurse and experience as stated in OPM regulations. Incumbent may be required to work rotational shifts, night, days, weekends, and holidays. Responsibilities Provide comprehensive emergency room nursing care to patients. Recognize life-threatening conditions that require immediate attention. Operate and monitor specialized equipment such as resuscitation units, cardiac monitors, ventilators, defibrillators, pulse oximeter, infusion pumps, IVACs, and warning devices. In absence of supervisor, accept professional and administrative responsibilities. Document observations, nursing interventions, therapeutic measures administered, and status of coordinated actives between nursing and other professional disciplines utilizing record system. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Education A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. Licensure For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Experience Basic Requirements for the GS-7 Grade Level: Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing and eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement provision; Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing and at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-5 grade level); Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and two full years of professional nursing experience; or Completion of at least one full year of graduate education in a professional nursing educational program Examples of Experience for the GS-07 Grade Level: Utilize the nurse process to initiate and complete patient assessment, as well as initiate, develop, implement, and evaluate the patient care plan; provide comprehensive nursing care to patients based on plan of care plan and the physician's medical plan of care; observe patient's clinical condition and provide nursing care including: appropriate notification of the physician, initiation of emergency measures, patient and family teaching; operate and monitor medical equipment such as respiratory equipment, thermatic devices, suction apparatus, nasogastric suction, incubators, defibrillators, electrocardiographs, etc.; administer therapeutic measures as prescribed by the physician including: medication, IV fluid, treatments, and assist with various procedures, such as preparing the patient, assisting during the procedure, and evaluating results. Basic Requirements for the GS-9 Grade Level : Possession of a master's degree in professional nursing; or At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-7 grade level or above) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program. Examples of Experience for the GS-09 Grade Level: Assess and care for the nursing needs of ER patients and other types of patients; recognize and intervene in acute life-threatening situations, develop plan of care to meet the needs of patients; recognize adverse signs and symptoms and react swiftly in emergency situations; triage patients; plan with minimal assistance in scheduling and providing comprehensive nursing care in the Emergency Department. Basic Requirements for the GS-10: At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level). Examples of Experience for the GS-10 Grade Level: Assess and determine acute states that result in an emergency; recognize potential changes such as fluid and drug side effects; recognize and intervene in acute life-threatening conditions, cardiac and respiratory management in medical, surgical, and obstetrical patients in the emergency room; interpret data. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level.
